I think that Filter Forge caches the thumbnails of the presets. If you edit the filter then save it, FF will recalculate the thumbnails and they will display correctly.
I don't know of a way to update the filters you've downloaded, though. Maybe there's a way to clear the cache using Explorer? |

Hi Mike,
I didn't edit the filter, I just opened it to look at the different presets and several of them don't match. Not just that filter, a few others too. These are filters that I had already downloaded and when I installed the new FF build over the original, it changed the way some of the filters display the presets. Was Metal Illusions one of the updates recently? I can't remember. ![]() Thanks anyway, Donna |

Mike, if you have time, would you download Metal Illusions (if you don't already have it) and take a look at the presets? See if they're different than the ones that show in the "Filters" tab of the web site. If they're the same, double click on a few of the presets and see what you get.
Thanks, Donna |

Sorry, I think you misunderstood me
![]() The preset images that you see as thumbnails are the images that were generated with the previous version of Filter Forge. When Filter Forge generates a thumbnail for a preset, it saves it to disk so that it won't have to recalculate the same image again. The only time when FF recalculates a thumbnail is when you Update the preset or Edit then Save the whole filter. Since the new FF uses different algorithms, the old, cached preset images don't match the new generated images, but the filter hasn't changed so FF still displays the old thumbnails. One way to tell that this is happening is to force Filter Forge to recalculate the thumbnails. To do this, select an older filter, select Edit from the Filter menu and then save the filter. The preset images will be recalculated and you should notice that they now match up. I've attached an image of how the Metal Illusions filter presets look when recalculated - see how the first preset now matches the image you posted above? ![]() |

Most likely, this difference is caused by the new random number generator we now use for all randomizable components. Here's a quote from our news release about the Update 1.003:
We will try to avoid discontinuous changes like this in future releases. We've re-rendered all preset thumbnails in the Filter Library, now they reflect the actual render. Here's how to fix the thumbnails: For 'My Filters' - just open them in the Editor and save them without making any changes, this will cause the preset thumbnails to update. For Filter Library filters - delete the filter in question and download it again, this will cause the preset thumbnails to be redownloaded from the server. Don't use this method if you have custom presets for this filter, because deleting the filter will also delete all its user presets. |

This also happens if user presets are edited outside of Filter Forge. I have merged the different user preset XML from the same filter on different computers, opened Filter Forge, and found that it displays thumbnails for filter presets out of order/wrong (the thumbnail shows one image, and when you double-click the thumbnail to render a larger preview, it's a totally different image.
Seen with my merged user presets for this filter. Opening the filter editor and re-saving the filter is a clunky workaround. Another clunky workaround is terminating Filter Forge, deleting the /caches and /thumbnails subfolders of the Filter Forge user folder, and restarting Filter Forge. There should be a "regenerate thumbnails" menu option/button. It would be ideal to add that and check for changes that could have been made outside Filter Forge: md5 hash user presets etc, cache the hash, recalculate the hash every time a filter is opened, and if it's different, regenerate thumbnails etc. (and update the md5 cache). You refer to the prophecy of the pastry that will bring balance to the Force. And you believe it's this...donut? |
