well, I have FF installed on three machines, so I didn't lose them all...I lost most of them. I did a windows 'repair' function. Since the filters are stored in an area cleared by the idiotic installer they were wiped out. Here I thought I had covered all of my bases...

I don't know about storing something so valuable in a place where it can easily be destroyed. Perhaps create a "my Filter Forge filters" folder in the "my documents" folder? This folder is usually sheilded from any deletion by a windows installer, plus, it's a folder that is normally backed up by any normal person. I've done more installs then I can recall and have 4 workstations at any one given time. For me to loose all the filters in this manner means that most other applications DO NOT store user data within the system umbrella. Here I STILL managed to get them deleted. Either I should be really embarrassed or they are placed in a dangerous spot.

Just a thought.

I seriously doubt that the Windows "Repair Installation" caused the problem. The filter storage location is a generic one, based on the user profile and closely matches the place where Windows stores your certificate keys, Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe software stores it's settings and caches, JASC/Corel PSP store their data, Mozilla Firefox stores the cache, bookmarks and preferences, etc.

I would strongly suggest you to backup all of your profile data (%HOMEDRIVE%\%HOMEPATH%) instead of backing up only "My Documents". Actually, by backing up only "My Documents", you will lose most of your application settings, your Outlook folders and settings, Start Menu items, Favorites (both IE and Firefox) and whole lot more.

The point: I see no problem with storing filters in %APPDATA% as this is the Microsoft recommended location for storing such data. There _may_ be a problem with Windows Setup and/or Windows Restore facilities not properly maintaining the contents of this folder, but I strongly disagree that FF should use some other user-managed location like "My Documents" since this is, well, user-managed, because of a problem in Windows "Repair Installation" procedure. Know your data, make and tets your backups wisely and thoroughly.

P.S. I understand that losing your data is a bad thing, but blaming FF for not covering your specific case won't help. Future versions of FF may include an option to relocate the data storage, but for entirely different reasons (ease of storage organization).

yes I know where FF stored the files. I'm not trying to blame FF for my loss. I've lost lots of data in the past, and basically it's mostly my fault.

My point is that for some reason the WinXP repair did in fact clear that folder. Something I would never have assumed to consider. I've lost a lot of data before but this I never expected. If this is a freak occurance... fine... but my mentioning this event certainly isn't for any other reason then to bring it to your attention! I know the FF files were there prior to the install since I copied one to send to someone only days prior.

Personally I'd like to keep the filters in the same folder on my server as my filter renders, so I can access the same set of filters from all of my machines! It's the way I do things, and this itself is responsible for my loss of filters. I'm so used to everything being on the server I didn't spend the appropriate time ensuring I had no data to lose doing this repair install.

My vote is for an itunes style library 'setting' for your filter library. I know personally that I would have utilized it immediately.

Also, Microsoft puts 'shut down' in the start menu.

Cheers.

That may be the problem. Since I don't consider my filters to be "settings". Which is perhaps why they were deleted. Windows repairs kills all or most of your apps, and settings can be replaced, but personal data files are NOT settings or cache files! I would expect Photoshop NOT to save anything I create without possibility of intervention in an application data folder. If it did, I'd consider something to be amiss with photoshop.

As I already said, the option to relocate the data folder is going to be included in a future (not next) release smile:)

So would I. Until I read here on the forums that you can just right-click to find the location of a filter, I didn't know where they were stored. I'm not a particularly big fan of applications storing things in a single immutable location. Mostly because I often end up with far too little space on my XP partition, and that's exactly why I chose a different partition for the install.

[Not regarding FF]
Doesn't your profile data get too large then? Again, you can always move your profile if you're running out of space.

Hi Folks, as OnyX said "the option to relocate the data folder is going to be included in a future (not next) release". So, for a while I'd suggest to use Allway Sync 4.6.5 that is Free for personal use. Allway Sync is free file and folder synchronization software for Windows. So you can set in several ways to sync the two folders in background and so on.

Cheers,
Lucato.
