There seems to be a suprising lack of tutorials on how to create your own filters. Ive found a few which are helpful but where do I go from here? Photoshop etc have literally endless tutorials from beginners to advanced but its not so with FF for some reason. After looking at some filters in the filter editor to see how they are made etc Ive come to the conclusion that for beginners there really is no hope of getting any better without much needed guidance. I could quite easily just add random components etc and get a result but where does a newb go to learn as far as creating filters from a specific idea such as if I wanted to make some fur or some carpet etc etc?
If you know of any good websites that are helpful or even books please direct me. Thankyou. ![]() |

The best way is to browse the Wiki, look at existing filters to learn and experiment. Everyone here started out that way.

I had a look at the wiki and its not all that detailed. A lot of the pages are blank as nobody has added any information. Personally I don't think I'll be parting with 200 bucks for a programme that has so little support.

Unfortunately, it does lack tutorials.....but each filter is actually a tutorial within itself. Say you want to create a carpet filter.....you go find existing carpet filters in the library that are along the lines of what you want.....open the editor on the filters.....study it to see how it works....and then run experiments to modify it towards what you want. Once you get going, you'll actually be surprised at how addictive it becomes.....and get sidetracked on all kinds of other things beyond carpet.....

Did you take a look at this wiki article? It contains most of the 'meat' on creating filters. The Beginner's Cookbook might also be of interest to you, although it is still in its infancy. While these two articles do not contain any detailed tutorials, they present a collection of generic techniques that are widely applicable in filter building. On a sidenote: The FF wiki material is neither officially endorsed learning material, nor complete or comprehensive in any way. The wiki is meant as a community-driven project that seeks to distill the existing FF knowledge scattered over the forums (and filter library) and make it more easily accessible. Sadly, only very few members of the community ever contributed to the wiki, hence its skeletal state. This is probably due to the large investment of personal (unpaid) time that is required to create relevant and informative wiki articles. Still, if it weren't for the wiki, the few official tutorials would be all the learning material that we'd have. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Its not that it has little support...You used the photoshop example which has been around far much longer and has a huge user base then FF..As dilla said....
If you need something specific you can always post questions in the Creating Filters thread...Some are always glad to help when they can...As far as creating a filter with that type of texture one has to look at some examples of the texture that you want to create wither it be a rug or fur....Think of it as drawing a portrait of a person...You need a reference point of the person to draw..ie...picture or the person right there as you draw....... btw...I am not associated with the Filter Forge company just a user and contributor.. If you need further guidance you can always email me and I will try to help if I can.... Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |
