StevieJ, why would you call this spam? Looks like CrazyBump is a texture rendering program.

It's a very nifty app for sure, and there's currently a beta version available on the forums for some free testing...

Actually, Crazy Bump is a pretty awesome program. What it does is allow you to take a regular old shaded photo, process it, and magically generate a normal map, a bump map, a diffuse (ie shadow removed map), an ambient occlusion map, and even specularity information.
This is sort of like a magical machine which takes omlettes and converts them to eggs, tomatos, sausage, and butter. Example:

And it works very well hand-in-hand with FF

Crazy Bump is handy! I worked with it back when I was working at a studio and I needed some ultra-bumping effect from a photograph. Before Filter Forge, I was basically taking photographs of textures in varieties of areas which I made them seamless using a program which I programmed myself.
One of the problems was that I had the source but I did not have the depth field (in other words I did have X and Y but not Z. I remember having to actually make a very similar program that did worse compared to Crazy Bump. Either way, I used the lighting patterns and also heavily used the highpass process to gain the bump maps I wanted. BUT when Crazy Bump came out I was awed. I bought it and I used it crazy for all of my texture projects for my studio. |

I have to admit, it does look cool. So many great software programs out there,
but for now, I am enjoying Filter Forge, I haven't seen a more cool fun program yet!
Have a GREAT weekend everyone! Ronjonie zazzle.com/Ronspassionfordesign*

Yup. However, $300 for the commercial license feels a bit too pricey in my book when comparing price vs. feature-set. ImageSynth for example is comparable to Crazy Bump in the feature-set/capabilities department, and its $99 price-tag seems much more reasonable. Then again, the CrazyBump developer does know how to milk game studios for what they're worth, and the price tag certainly reflects that. There's also ShaderMap for those tight budget folks. Haven't looked into it yet, but it looks useable. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

strange I was thinking about that program this morning.. think I might aim for getting that unless someone can figure out how to do something similar with FF Clicked the link for shadermap and see what you mean about more affordable!! Will have a look when I get some spare time as well. Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)

Huh, I've never heard of ShaderMap. Thanks for the tip! Hey, it's only 20$.
I think ImageSynth more of a texture-maker / intelligent combiner? Like, you take 2 photos and it makes a tileable, coherent texture out of it. (I have an Art Director friend who swears by it, btw.) Crazybump is more like extract bump, diffuse, and normals out of a regular photo. Both are pretty useful... |

Yeah, the specialized pro tools are expensivo, no doubt about it. But, if you have a great tool which can save you hundreds of hours of staff time, $300 can seem like a bargain. These guys have no excuse, though, IMHO! |

I should have made my statement more clear. What I meant was that ImageSynth and CrazyBump are comparable in the 'breadth' of their functionality, not that they're identical in functionality.
Wasn't that ryan's argument for defending the CrazyBumo price tag? --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Yeah i actually saw ShaderMap the other day before reading this thread they basically seem to do the same thing but ShaderMap is a much nicer cost.
