In FForge and for example in Unreal, the node flow is from right to left. I'd like to know why? I mean we read from left to right. Past is on the left, future is on the right. Same on a measurement tape.

We discussed this topic previously:
http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read...=9&TID=186

The short answer: Left-to-Right is better for 'reading', but is not so good for 'writing', since in Filter Forge you actually 'write' backwards.

Actually, after seeing the workspace zoom in action, I thought that we could try this left-to-right thing again. We are currently working on a new interaction style for the editor, which will have left-to-right connections, marquee selection and right-click pan.

If anyone is interested to try this experimental build out, let me know that (just post here in this thread), and I'll send you the installer when it's ready.

I would love to try the experimental build! smile:)

I checked out the linked discussion, and the flipped nodes feel just as right as the normal ones. (To me anyway.)

I searched for more examples and I found an interesting thing: the Unreal3 engine is going to have some kind of a node based scripting interface. There are nodes with slots at the left, right and bottom of the box (for events, variables and alike). The scripts were all structured like a storyboard: left to right.

My guess is that this is something like left or right handedness: just a way one's mind works. Some feels natural this way some the other way. I could even imagine a flowchart kinda top-down structure or a pyramid sort of bottom up as well. (No, those are not feature requests. smile;)

Would be interesting to see how different it is in building another filter with a lot of components with this build. Add me to the list. smile:)

the right to left or left to right makes little difference to me. i'm comfortable with the way it is now, but certainly wouldnt mind trying the other way. i do have a question or two, though. will this experimental build overwrite the current FF or could it be installed separatly and have both be able to work? also, if it is an overwrite, would it still work the same way on uploading and downloading filters or would that whole part be disabled for now? and, will this build have all the other current updates?

Yes, it will overwrite the currently installed version of FF (all the filters will be preserved, but I'm not sure about the Options.xml and Preferences.xml -- they may get deleted).

This build is based on the upcoming update, so it will have all the latest features and fixes. It will download filters, but I'm not sure about the upload (the new editor may require changes to the .ffxml format).

Me too! I've been dying to get workspace zoom for a while, but I'm not too sure about the left-to-right idea. I'm used to it the way it is... smile:D

Update: we have cancelled the experimental left-to-right build. Instead, we're integrating the left-to-right connections, the new pan style and the marquee selector into the next update. Stay tuned.
