I havent noticed any comments on my textures yet, i have also noticed some textures that look very similar to mine so im guessing some users edited my filters to make new ones. Does the fact that nobody has commented on my filters mean that they are not considered good textures? I noticed on the buy page that when you submit filters you get discounts but it says for good filters, i think my filters are ok but because nobody has commented on them i fear i wont be getting a discount, does my effort still count for something or do i have to get good ratings for them all before they count for something? thanks

Don't worry - if nobody has said anything, it simply means that they have nothing to say. It's not an indictment on the quality of your textures
i have also noticed some textures that look very similar to mine so im guessing some users edited my filters to make new ones.
Be a little careful with comments like this. Your textures are reasonably generic, so it's not unlikely that someone else would create something similar in the process of making another texture, and it could easily happen without them even knowing of your texture.
Also, similar filters may have been created before yours which (using your logic) would mean you were the one doing the copying (I imagine you weren't, but the argument is just as valid/invalid.)
I noticed on the buy page that when you submit filters you get discounts but it says for good filters, i think my filters are ok but because nobody has commented on them i fear i wont be getting a discount, does my effort still count for something or do i have to get good ratings for them all before they count for something?
The way the system is proposed at present seems to be that a filter will count towards a discount for the creator if the filter is popular (i.e., it is applied/saved frequently, not just downloaded or viewed a lot), or if the filter is chosen as an editorial pick. This will probably not be an easy task, but perservere at making desirable, different and useful filters and you'll increase your chances.
AFAIK the system will not begin to function until the software is released. Now's the best time to get in there before the testing period expires!

Thanks Mike, It's just a shame the beta testing time will run out, im guessing i will probably end up having to pay full price unless i can come up with something really original.

James,
Don't worry to much. Here is a post Vladmir made in another thread that made me feel better about my chances. He seems to appreciate those who are trying to make Filter Forge a premier product.
From Thread : Itching to see the next version
Any registered beta tester who reported a bug, helped us
reproduce a bug, helped us fix a bug, suggested a feature
that made it into the product, or suggested a feature that
was included into our development plan, will get a free copy.
These conditions aren't rigid, and can be expanded to include
other situations and kinds of feedback.

.....as Mike has already said so eloquently...
The "regular" filter stuff has been pretty well covered by now. To stand out you need something different, a "man bites dog" sortta thing.
While looking for your filters I did find one however that has a lot to comment on (although, maybe this may not be representative).
Wooden Floor
1) Motion Blur is a slow component, I'm pretty sure you could have used the stretch parameter of the Perlin noise to get the same or better effect (quicker);
2) You used brick only to define the outlines, missing an opportunity to use the H/L/S range of this component to introduce subtle variations between the different boards;
3) The mixing in of the grain using a Asemble HSB / Gamma / Levels combination could probably have been done just using a Greyscale as an Overlay in a Blend component;
4) The patterns in one board will not align with the patterns in the boards surrounding it - so a generic wood pattern should not be applied to the whole image;
5) The Settings sliders are confusing - three have the same name and none is too clear as to what it does. The Controls also are not in the places a user will want to tweak (such as basic colour, board roughness, repeats)
OK, I'm sure I found your worst filter.
But if there's any particular filter you wish to discuss, I would be pleased to offer some comments.

Thats good i suggested a few features that were liked so hopefully i will apply for this and also that i have submitted filters. Thanks byRo, yeah Wooden Floor is not my best texture, For your comment my reply would be i just experimented with various things untill i got the result i wanted so i wasn't really thinking about speed issues, but i don't really think that should matter much as the program should and does let you create various things using various methods i might not have used the best setup but the final result is should be what counts i think, many thanks Oh and also i added some filters to the filters area to be commented on but the threads seemed to have dissapeared, is it only the mods that can post/advertise someones filter? thanks again

James, our forum robot deletes empty threads in Filter Comments once a day. If you want to keep the thread alive, just append some text when adding a comment (like "here's my new filter etc), that should solve the problem.

I'm really obsessed with the idea of launching a working system within this beta, because I definitely don't want to test it on a release product.
I'm even thinking about extending the beta testing period beyond the end of September in case we still don't have a working approval/reward system by that time. If we decide to do so, we'll probably offer an early adopter deal that would allow people to purchase the beta ans save ~$100-$150.

I'd like to update this list with a new condition: People who expand the common pool of knowledge about Filter Forge also qualify for a free copy.
I don't have a precise definition yet, but here's a preliminary version: Anyone who submits a snippet illustrating a new workflow or technique or shares this technique with other users on these forums can qualify for a free copy.
