Filter itself is pretty nice.

I wouldn't call it "Van Gogh" given Van Gogh had a pretty specific color choice and style. Current filter looks more rolled towards the gray scale with less vibrance. I guess the filter can do that but it should pay attention to how van Gogh chose his palette, brushes, and technique. (personally struggling to get that specific look myself!)

I like it and is good and nice I prefer much more the preset 2 than number 1

Thanks for keeping working on this great style of filter and I think you have done a great work

I think that really he is NOT refering to the real Van Gogh the artist, I think he may be refering to the original filter called Van Gogh Flow without script by Darrel Plank that uses something similar

By the way Rick Duim is not the first filter that is called "Van Gogh" as there are 3 previous ones

Radial Van Gogh

Double Radial Van Gogh

Brush Engine Van Gogh

Also I know it because Rick Duim told me about it in this thread

Nice Van Gogh Flow filter variations of the main shape used

As it turns out, I am making a simplified version of Brush Engine Van Gogh with the Bomber+ component. The major improvement is the ability to separately control hue, saturation, and brightness variation for the brush strokes. For the moment it can not be released due to issues between bomber+, particle adapter and non-square images.

Ah, Skybase, the name is advertising. Sort of a series of filters, yeah, I am guilty of using a name to promote a filter smile;)

True, the presets are more towards the gray, but this is all down to the Background Lightness. Which I kept towards the black in the presets, but can be made white or a standard background as well. This is sort of a simpler version of Brush Engine Van Gogh (12 controls vs gasp 27). No Bomber+ though, could not work with it given the problems with the Particle Adapter and the so so performance.

And also, constrained brush angles are available with the Brush Angle control.

Heh, of course that's the semantics of what's being referred to. I just think it's an impressionist filter with it's own style. My gut says that over the last couple years we've kinda just come to slap the term "Van Gogh" on anything we see painterly swirlies happening. Sure, not a bad thing, it's generalizing on some facts.

No offense to anybody though. I personally think it's a cool filter in itself. It's an impressionist filter, and it has its own style. I'm just trying to look at each filter from a different light. I sometimes think a filter that says what it does should represent that to the best of its ability. So to me, there would be weakness of style in this filter given how the name carries much the legacy and meaning.

Pretty funny, actually. smile:D In the end it's just a filter. Probably a more accurate name would have been Impressionist Painter. But that's water under the Van Gogh bridge now... Ok, school teacher, I'll take the point off smile8)

Rachel,a more accurate name would not have been Impressionist Painter. As a user of filters it would be helpful to more accurately refer to the filter's effects in it's name instead of calling it Van Gogh or Impressionist Painter. I agree with Skybase. There are so many great filters to choose from on Filter Forge that putting more thought into the name of your filter would be helpful to users.
