    ... using grids n stuff in Illustrator. But if you want something parametric, much easier to do this in those 3D programs mentioned. Honestly in FilterForge, sometimes the most basic things tend to take more brains / time to accomplish. :p I think this challenge would probably be one of the most technically challenging one because of the given parameters: 3D, in a sphere, accepts different colors per tile, has perspective. I can imagine how to do it but I can't imagine what to put down first hand. ...
