  • Just slow...........
Author: Targos. Hiya, I really notice how sluggish FilterForge is on my macbook pro. It has a decent cpu and 256mb of videoram, but when scrolling through my library of filters, less than half the thumbnails render in realtime, the others take ages to render (just the thumbnails) the scrolling is far from smooth (its horrible), and also the preset thumbnails below the library are almost always blanked out, and take around a minute or longer to appear. I have ...

  • Script-component-based filter ideas
... render thread, it could be done. Currently you'd have to calculate the image as many times as there render squares. This makes some Scripts (at least) 64 times slower than they need to be. This is really making some effects hard. It is painfully slow to do, for instance, an Internal Average Color script, for you have to calculate the whole image for every render square. No wonder it isn't in the Components. But blessed be the day a bitmap component appears there.

... saying. You are saying that my filter is unusual compared to most in that it's render times scale exponentially? I was just saying that your render times compared to mine make sense. " Yes and no. There are lots of filters that have relatively slow render times, but they do not in my experience differ between a 9 mega pixel and a 13 mega pixel by so great a ratio. It would be more proportional. In the case of the sizes I tried, half again longer would be the normal case ... so at 3600 x 3600, your ...

  • Request: GPU acceleration (CUDA and OpenCL)
... for Nvidia graphics cards 57 posts about OPENCL This is for any brand of graphics card that would be better I think 33 posts about REALTIME PREVIEW 46 post about HARDWARE ACCELERATED 500 posts about "speed rendering" or "render speed" both give same result If I put in the search "FF Slow" it also gives curiously 500 posts MAYBE NOT ONLY HARDWARE RELATED ACCELERATION I have already suggested that the hardware acceleration may not be the only way to make FF faster Also maybe another possible solution is to separate the ...

  • Abstract Triangles by CFandM
Author: SpaceRay. Hello, nice and good artistic and abstract triangles seen in the presets thumbnails in the filter page, and I like them, BUT I have not been able to render them, because is too slow and have been waiting and nothing happened, after 4 minutes nothing appeared, perhaps I should wait more, and this is for any of the presets at 600x600.

  • Videocard question.
Author: Crapadilla. "onyXMaster wrote in another thread (http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read.php?FID=11&TID=1772&MID=11320#message11320): GFX card isn't used in rendering. Unless you have some antique card that makes even blits slow (by "antique" I mean "manufactured in 2001 or earlier") -- it doesn't matter Smile" :D

  • The DOs and DON'Ts of Filter Construction
... "Crapadilla wrote: ... or how about a 'console' that logs sample cache building and flushing on a per-component basis?" This would require at least one conditional jump in the innermost cycle, which we definitely wouldn't like -- it will slow the rendering down for everyone, even for people who have the console turned off.

  • Classic Floor Tile by Mike Blackney
Author: Crapadilla. "ahimsa wrote: Congratulations on your newest Editor's Pick!" Yup. Well deserved! :) "Vladimir Golovin wrote: (a little slow though)." Hmmm... renders pretty fast here: 18-20 seconds on average. Seems speedy enough. ;) It does seem a little unresponsive while interactively tweaking though. Maybe one could get rid of the blur/highpass?

  • Glow
Author: onyXMaster. If you are using the currently available version of Filter Forge, take note that it has some recently introduced performance deficiencies that may contribute to slow rendering time. These deficiencies will be fixed in the next update (the fix itself is already implemented, I estimate it is going to be submitted for release procedures in a few days).

  • Suggestion to give to new filters a Speed render level rating or mark
Author: SpaceRay. "GMM wrote: That's true. But what if your computer can render a "slow" filter in 1 second? Would you spend extra optimization efforts to make it render in 0.9 seconds? " No, it´s true that would not need to optimize for getting it in 0.9, BUT please can you tell and make a list of How many filters are ...

Author: lipebianc. The "SHARPainting (Slow)" option applies just a simple sharpness processing to the overall effect. As this can cost some extra render time, it's available only as a fixed setting. Users looking for more control/fine-tune on the "SHARPainting" look, just render the effect with this option unchecked and post-process using simple sharpen/unsharp mask on your favourite ...

There have been heaps of occasions when I've been twiddling parameters and wanted to go back a few steps... 3. Automatic Background Render Queue I've been generating a lot of 8000x8000 images with some slow filters and lots of antialiasing; these take awhile (hours). Currently when I press 'Save Image As' in Stand-alone mode, FilterForge can't be used again until the image is finished. What I think would be really neat is this: When you press ...

  • Render selected area at full resolution?
.... I think that would be really handy. I mean, this is essentially what happens when you change the variation; the difference would be the ability to search visually through an expanded and compressed field. Much more interactive, but probably too slow depending on the render weight of the filter.

... heard by now, AND ARE ALSO IGNORED and does not taken into account and as GMM has confirmed there will be no GPU acceleration, and although has not confirmed if there will be another way to speed FF, I think and believe that FF 4.0 will have the SAME slow render engine of FF 3.0, so the many voices fr om the forum will not be really heard. "Skybase wrote: So just be patient, don't worry, it'll have to happen one way or another." OH, Yes, it will happen, of course, the problem is WHEN!!...

  • Looping NIK Generator 12 by jhantares
Author: jhantares. If FF crashs it's possible there is not enough free memory. Try to reduce image size. Unfortunally loops are very slow and need much memory. My PC has 16 GB memory, I'm using Win 7 64 bit, that gives FF about 3,5 GB of free memory. I've rendered an image 5000x5000 pixel without errors. But FF crashs sometimes at my pc too, if i try to render to big images and it depends from used filter also. I'm using a 4 GB RAM-disc for FF tmp files also.

  • Slate Flooring by Crapadilla
Author: Crapadilla. Yup, I've already requested for the update to be removed. I'll submit a much faster version once it's gone from the queue. The slow rendering speed is due to a fix I had to introduce for the 'De La Robia Weave' bond type to look good. I didn't expect that this modification would increase rendering time that drastically. In the next update, I'll have to deactivate the 'De La Robia ...

Author: emme. Yeah, water and reflections is definitely on the todo-list. I have a crude way of rendering raymarched reflections, but currently it's really broken and slows everything down by about 6x. Underwater is a cool idea. I guess the trick is to make the lighting very diffused and lower the visibility. Maybe disabling directional shadows and using mostly ambient occlusion. Here's a test with the broken reflections ...

Author: CorvusCroax. OK, the filter is submitted to the library. I think it still needs some work, but it's probably good enough for now. If I were to spend more time on this, I'd figure out a better way to do the roads. It's kind of slow (b/c of all the blending), but you really need to let it render out at full anti-aliasing.
