I know that Filter forge uses the square tiling to be able to make the seamless tilings, as this one is the simplest and easiest to do.

BE AWARE - Possible Crazy idea suggestion and Vladimir would scream smile:D

BUT, this is not the only way that a seamless tiling can be made, as there are other many ways to make tilings as shown below

Instead of ONLY using the square tiling, Filter forge could have a choice of tiling and choose different shapes to tile the base image and the filter result into those different shapes as shown above.

Why limit the tiling only to the square one ? ( I know is the simplest and easiest to make)

TRIANGLE TILING

HEXAGONAL TILING

STAR TILING

An more complex tiling like the DODECAEDRON TILING

And much more complex tilings like the PENROSE TILING

PENROSE TILING MORE EXPLAINED IN WIKIPEDIA

And there are many more

And if you think that this is impossible to programm and use this kind of tilings with photos you are wrong, as these has already been released and are available in this other software called Kaleidoscope Kreator 3

I thought I saw a similar post regarding tiling methods ages ago. It's something I'm still interested in seeing in future versions regardless.

Well this was thread was done in 2011 and I still thinking about making all these kind of different tilings in Filter Forge as it happens already in the Kaleidoscope Creator 3 , and I think that in FF 6.0 or FF 7 with the new greenified components it could be possible to make in some way

Sorry that I do not know if there is already any Kaleidoscope filter that is able to make any of the tiling suggested in the first post

Crapadilla made a reference to the 17 wallpaper groups
