The bits for the bit workers

Greetings,

I have two ideas to suggest for the next version.
I think it has already been discussed the extreme need of counting with more mathematical flexibility. The curve formulas could be input by the user, that would be fantastic and would improve FF's features in a great way.

Another characteristic that would empower the program would be a cellular automata component. The ability to create patterns and modify components would become terribly big. Cellular automata are pretty fast to compute and their aesthetics are both varied and eye-catching. They're used in several common filters, Blur being one of them and High Pass as well, if I'm not mistaken. It would be great if you could add the possibility to create custom cellular automata building rules.

Both suggestions have a rather simple mathematical complexity and would increase the program's potential way beyond other filter-maker programs. New users could avoid complications directly by not using the most complex characteristics of these new components. Advanced users would be in heaven.

Here are some links about cellular automata:

i agree it's cool. i remember this from WAY back in my computing days, but i'm at a loss here. how would you translate or implement this concept as something usable in FF?

Left, natural shell. Right, synthetic shell. In the middle, only awe.

I wonder if Vladimir or someone from the staff is reading this.
What do they think?

I'm not Vladimir, but I think I will suffice, since there was time when I read some Conway's books.
CAs operate with discrete cells, performing simulation step-by-step (generations in terms of "The Game of Life").
Filter Forge operates with function samples only. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule (bitmap-based components like Blur), so I do not rule out the possibility of emulating small-generation CAs, but I seriously doubt that CAs will make it into next major versions of Filter Forge.
