DL'd filters won't work on older version

Why won't the filters I previously downloaded work in older version?
I get this error message when it opens saying that it cannot load library blah blah - you need to update Filter Forge to open this filter...
I don't recall seeing anything that says some filters only work in latest version.

Previously downloaded filters will work, but you won't be able to download any new filters if your version of FF isn't up-to-date.
