Here I am working on a filter that I had been toiling with for several days. I click the save filter button to see the presets, and what do you know, an error pops up and filter forge closes. I reload and another error pops up that tells me it can't open that filter because it is invalid. I check the file and the filter has become 0-bytes! Basically it's gone and I lost everything I did under that filter name.
Then, the same thing happens to a filter I just started! That's probably twice in one half-hour!!! Something's not working right here... I tried for a few more minutes to cause the same thing to happen again but I was unsuccessful in creating my own error to pop up, so I can't provide exactly what the error said. It's really disappointing to lose filters like this, especially right before I was going to submit the first one and if this keeps up I think filter forge will cease to become one of my hobbies. Can anyone help me? Please? With an mega-super-extremely-dark-chocolate-covered-cherry-on-top-of-a-vanilla-ice-cream-sundae-on-a-hot-day-in-July? |

It's a known issue, should be fixed in V2.

as jffe said, a known error. those of us who have lost 50 or so filters from this, tend to learn to back up our filters at regular intervals, regardless!

By backing up filters, do you mean saving different versions of the filter under different names? I think I'll have to do that, not the end of the world to replace the filter I lost...curiously this problem only started for me yesterday...
When's V2 coming and what will it have? |

yes, save to different versions or file names as your work progresses, rock_1, rock_1a, rock_1b, etc., etc.
the bug in question is a resource leak. the longer filter forge is running continuously, the more windows/computer resources get used up. eventually, there arent enough resources for FF to work properly and it crashes. it can crash in any number of odd ways, depending on what resources have been used up and so on. so, the temporary 'fix' is to save your filters to different names VERY regularly and, if FF starts acting up in ANY way, immediately save and exit completely. killing FF will return most of the resources used up and you can then start it again and run it normally for another length of time. the symtoms of an impending crash are a jumping mouse cursor, slower than normal operations and any other odd behavior like a laggy mouse cursor. if any of that starts to happen, just save your work, kill FF and start it up again. but, beware; sometimes, you get no warning at all. it simply crashes. so, frequent saves are the only sure bet. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

It sounds like I had same problems just this last month. I was finally issued new key...and it fix my problem...possibly we had a deferent variation of the same problem because mine did not coincide with length of time FF was running…. And yes I know how bad it is to lose 2-3 hours of work and can’t even send a bug report.
![]() ![]() The last filter I worked on was (specifically for “disabled†people) denied. We cannot accept the filter you submitted Unfortunately, we cannot accept the filter Parallel Nebulas you have submitted to the Filter Library. It takes too long to render. Try to optimize it for speed and resubmit it. ![]() Darn the luck…I knew it was a long rendering filter on a few of the presets…but not all of them…my number one preset was longest rendering but was one hell of piece of ‘generated art’ which is what I designed it to be…so I thought the longer rendering issue might be over-looked…so about 20 some hours of work down the drain. And now that my trail period has run out I have no way to optimize it for speed to resubmit it ![]() But that is another thread I guess. ![]() "There are two types of people in the world - those with a gun, and those who dig. hi daniel,
did you apply for a trial extension? FF inc. often allows for 2 extensions or a total of 90 days on the whole demo. so, you might still be able to submit it. and if not, i'd fair say someone here would be willing to submit it for you or optimize it and submit it if that's what's needed. FF inc has allowed the transfer of HU points to others in the past, so get someone to submit it with the proviso that if it goes HU, you get the HU. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Hey Craig how are you doing bud.
yes I did apply for my last extension...unfortunately we could not fix the problem until a bout a week before time ran out...like I said- I had been working on 6 filters and when I went to save work and started typing key words & descriptions I got an error message and lost every thing. (Even stuff that was saved previously) anywho Bella shot me a new key and problem was gone...however the few days I had left I could only get 1 filter done....lol It was to be my Crème da la Crème. I had been working on it since I started FF...It is a BIG filter I only had about a day or two left to work on it but I had to submit it prematurely…and as my previous letter states it was denied...if there is a way someone here would be willing to optimize it and submit it for me that would be Great! How do we do that? And to show my Newbie degree how does the transfer of HU points work? Assuming HU = High Usage... guess I should see if there is an article on that. Thanks again Craig for all your help! ![]() "There are two types of people in the world - those with a gun, and those who dig. Now dig!" |

wow, you lost all your filters in one crash? that sucks.
as for someone helping you optimize, i'd volunteer but my quota of good deeds is full for this month (and i hate having to wait for slow filters ![]() ![]() and i dont really know how the transfer of HU's is done, but you need FF's help on it, so try the contact form and ask them. ----They don't do that any more. It's all or nothing, ie = give FF to someone and hope they'll repay you when they get 3 Hu's. jffe Added: Not that anyone asked ha-ha, but I have done that twice (made that repay me deal), both offered, and one actually did it (well, I let the other person off the hook since they were kind of distant in a way), and gave FF to someone else for me. ![]() Filter Forger |

Yeah I can see why they would frown on it…the bigger they get the more people that are not all that trustworthy slip’in through the cracks...well I will just hope for some of my other filters catch on. Thanks anyways ...Thanks Craig and it was nice to meet you jffe...

We've released a hotfix for this (just download the installer from our download page). From now on, the Editor won't save to the original filter directly. It will first save the filter into a temporary .ffxml file in My Filters, and if the save was successful, it will copy the temp file over the original filter. Should the Editor crash before the saving, your original filter will stay unmodified.

You can't directly transfer HUs (i.e. reward points) to a different user account, but you can certainly claim a 3 point reward in the name of a friend and also have the license sent to a friend's email rather than your own. I've done that a few times already, and it works perfectly well. [On a side-note: I was also planning to give some Mac licenses away as christmas presents to some friends, but oh well! ![]() It gets a little confusing once you claim those life-long upgrades though, because it nowhere states which license you're claiming that upgrade for. Anyways, I'm sure the FF team will introduce some advanced license administration features in the long run... --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Yup, I was going to say that there would have to be some way of doing this... (Where there's a will...) yet getting paid back from that individual is still a risk. But then if you consider them as a friend that ‘should’ be a mute point. And as FF takes off and gets even bigger there is the risk of an unsavory character or two slipping in...So those people who are more charitable then others may end up getting the shaft. ![]() Personally for me as I read the forums it sealed for me that this is more then just a great piece of software…but a group of people that become like a family… Call it a clan, call it a network, or call it a tribe. Whatever you call it, everybody needs one. They laugh, joke around, they are there when there is something you just don’t understand,(thanks Craig!!!!) or when you have problem that is unrelated to FF. ok, ok getting long winded here. ![]() "There are two types of people in the world - those with a gun, and those who dig. I kinda wish we could still give away 1 HU point at a time, not just in 3's or whatever. Perhaps in the future FF will add that functionality to the rewards dept, as I think it would encourage more good will overall, and more people to be submitting filters that go HU.
