Some of my "associates" have been encountering program lock-ups in rendering with filters that use primarily muliple blur components at approximately 3000 x 3000 and above.....
I was wondering if there are any advanced "computer tweaks" (virtual memory/paging file, cache, buffers, etc.) that can be generally applied to "optimize" all systems rendering high res images in FF without any possible negetive effects to other programs??? Steve

I've never been able to lock FF up. Crash it yeah ha-ha, but never had a full lock up that I recall. You can't Ctrl/Alt/Delete and kill it in the task manager even ?

Hey jffe In most cases it's causing a complete system freeze and forcing a hard shutdown of their computers.....
They all have fast multi-core machines like Dilla..... Steve

Hmm, I never really had FF freeze up, even on my old P4 2.4Ghz with 1gig of ram. I did have a filter that took 20 mins or so to do even one square of the render at 3600 X 3600. It never froze up though, it just sat there and crunched numbers ha-ha.

It seems to be tied to the slow, multi-pass components in a filter.....specifically, multiple blurs.....
Try your new machine rendering a 3600 x 3600 with Dilla's "Cartography" filter.....I would be interested in your results towards isolating this problem.....
BTW, what did you get for a new machine??? Steve

Cartography, the main preset, took 4 minutes and 9 seconds at 3600 X 3600 (with anti-aliasing off). The first square showed up in about 12-15 seconds, which leads to believe that this is not really a *slow* filter at all. I have a 6850 processor, a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo, and 2 gigs of ram. No idea why this particular filter could be giving you problems really.

Thanks for doing that.....wasn't actually giving me problems, but it was with some others who are using FF.....
My only problems have stemmed from the "resource leak" problems.....but I've been trying out different things to try and "dull down" the problems from it.....like I discovered that my anti-virus software (Sophos) and Windows Defender were having repeated issues with FF's "x86" files, etc..... Steve

I don't run any anti-virus stuff cept WinXp's built in fire-wall. For the most part I just shut everything off cept like yahoo chat, the internet and maybe winamp or wmp to listen to some music or watch videos while stuff renders, and wmp seems to slow it down 5% or so, but the vids don't lag and jitter anymore with the dualcore at least.
