I had a problem in my work, and am wondering what is wrong here. The filter is a simple gradient, but it seems to be assuming something I can't set. What I want, is a simple 3-color vertical gradient. What I'm getting is a repeating gradient.

--> ffxml here -->

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Filter>
<Components>
<Result id="result">
<Source source="colorgradient3 01"/>
<FilterType value="0"/>
<Lighting>
<Height value="0.2"/>
<Environment>
<Source value="Church"/>
<Brightness value="1"/>
<Saturation value="1"/>
<Rotation value="0"/>
</Environment>
</Lighting>
</Result>
<ColorGradient3 id="colorgradient3 01">
<Color1 red="0.705426" green="0.583813" blue="0.412866" alpha="1"/>
<Color2 red="0.457364" green="0.304109" blue="0.212728" alpha="1"/>
<Color3 red="0.127907" green="0.0411403" blue="0.0242924" alpha="1"/>
<Position1 value="0"/>
<Position2 value="0.38"/>
<Position3 value="1"/>
<Rotate value="1"/>
<Repeat value="1"/>
<Transition value="0"/>
</ColorGradient3>
</Components>
<Presets>
<DefaultPreset>
<Settings size_factor="1" variation="1" seamless="false" antialiasing="2" map_type="0" edges_only="true"/>
<Lighting>
<Height value="0.2"/>
<Environment>
<Source value="Church"/>
<Brightness value="1"/>
<Saturation value="1"/>
<Rotation value="0"/>
</Environment>
</Lighting>
<Controls/>
</DefaultPreset>
</Presets>

<FilterEditor>
<ThumbnailSize value="1"/>
<Viewport left="0" top="30" zoom_factor="1"/>
<LockPreview>
<Locked value="false"/>
<LockedComponent name=""/>
</LockPreview>
<Item id="colorgradient3 01">
<Position left="150" top="-25"/>

<Position left="-25" top="-25"/>

</FilterEditor>
</Filter>

Unfortunatly you can't have a vertical gradient on a vertical image without having it tile. smile:(

So in the description for this filter, Should I just suggest the gradient be passed as the input?

Not sure I understand what you mean.

I need the gradient to go the full vertical length and the output needs to be a least 1024 x 1024. Since I can't use the internal gradient, would the filter be acceptable if it depends on a gradient from a file as a source image?

Yeah, that should work fine.

You know the program generates vertical gradients just fine for square images. If I were you I'd just crop the image after I was done applying the effect.

How funny! In actual life, most of the maps I'll be making are square, so the problem just disappeared. Guess I didn't read this part.
