For example set 'Variation' to 5000. Now click on the position indicator and it will change to 4879 even though it does not appear to move. This is annoying because sometimes you want to get back to having the control 'active' without changing its value.

This is the default behavior of a Windows slider control. On the screen, it's just about 100 pixels long but it has to produce the values ranging from 0 to 5000, so every pixel of the slider/screen space corresponds to 50 possible values. When you click the knob, it probably snaps to what it considers the closest value.
