I have installed Filter Forge, but when I try to open it as a stand alone nothing happens. When I try to use the PhotoShop plugin nothing happens and PhotoShop freezes. I mean literally nothing happens, after I double click on the Filter Forge icon, I check the process list in Task Manager and nothing shows.

I have contacted support, but it has been several days and no reply other than the initial acknowledgment and a request for a copy of the running processes after trying to start FilterForge.

Filter Forge looks great, but if I can't get it to run, it is pretty much useless to me.

Details: I have a Boxxtech workstation: Vista Ultimate 64bit, 8GB ram, Adobe master collection. The FF plugin is of course in the 32bit version of PhotoShop.
When I installed it, I shut down all antivirus/spyware programs and ran the install in administrator mode.

I ordered this to use in a current project, but my deadline is coming up, if I can't resolve this I will have to return it and see if I can find some alternative.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

kieron, such questions are best addressed to the support team:

(I already forwarded the link.)

Thank you for the replies.

Carl, I wish it were that simple. I get nothing no box to click or to not click and no amount of waiting seems to help. About the longest I have waited for any response thus far was a little over two hours...and nothing.

Vladimir, thanks for the referral. As I noted in the second paragraph of my initial post, I have tried contacting support without success and lately no responses at all to my follow up emails. As of this post I have received nothing from support in response to your forwarding of the link to this forum entry.

Given that this is the "Bugs and Problems (Windows)" forum it seemed the appropriate venue to ask if others might have had a similar problem and what they did to overcome it.

Details: I have a Boxxtech workstation: Vista Ultimate 64bit, 8GB ram,

vladimir has stated elsewhere that FF will not work as a plugin on 64 bit o/s machines. it will run in standalone, but not as a plugin. hopefully, that's coming down the road sometime soon.

that being said, i would have thought it would work in standalone. have you tried uninstalling and re-installing? sometimes, downloads of any kind will not be right. the only thing to do is uninstall whatever you have and download again, making sure you get the full byte size file and install it again. a file doesnt have to be very corrupt for it to not work at all or to work badly.

i dont know that this is the case for you, that you have a bad/corrupt download, but i would think FF was tested for 32 bit vista and therefore shld work. there might also be program conflicts, being that vista is such a bloated hog (sorry, i'm just not a fan of bloatware). but, i'd start with the new download and install first. but, you might want to turn extra junk off before you try the new install, just in case.

Unfortunately Filter Forge doesn't work as a plugin under 64-bit host apps
You can use it as a stand-alone application.

Thanks for the replies Carl and Kraellin.

I have tried redownloading and reinstalling several times, with the same results. Bite size is consistent for all downloads.

I have since received the CD and tried installing from that, same results.

It does not open as a standalone.
It appears in the filter list in the 32bit version of PS, but does not open from there either.

I have seen the problems with most plugins not being ready for 64bit PS. I can live with that. I usually go to the 64bit only when I am doing something I expect to be really resource intensive. As more plugins become 64bit capable I will use the 64bit more.

I think there may be something in Vista that is preventing the program from starting, but I have no clue what it might be. I have a lot of software for my design work, but I have never had this difficulty before. I almost wonder if Filter Forge is trying to write somewhere that Vista doesn't want it to.

I wish I were more technically inclined.

yeah, it wouldnt surprise me if vista was blocking it somehow. i just dont know where, since i dont run vista. is there a compatibility mode in vista? you might try running it in that.

Based on a suggestion in another thread, I rebooted to SAFE mode and was able to start FilterForge. So the culprit is Vista or at least one of the many functions it opens by default, but which one?

I will see what I can find out about a compatibility mode.

well, i recently got my 64 bit vista and installed FF on it. it worked fine. no problems whatsoever. so, it could be another program you have running on the machine that's conflicting somehow.

It's not a Vista problem... I had to install in safe mode on xp64 to get it to run.

I didn't not know that it did not work in PS with xp64. You have to search the forum before buying to find out???

Kinda stinks!

Eric, do you use ZoneAlarm or Spyware Doctor?
Also, I assume you're using version 1.0 – right?

My workstation has no security what so ever. I do not allow it onto the Net unless to authorize software.

Yes Version 1.0 or what ever I just downloaded from the main page yesterday. 1.x?

Any other options?

Hmm... we're running out of possible reasons. Do you have a debugger installed? Filter Forge won't start if a debugger is running.

One more question: please explain what you mean by 'will not run': the process starts but no GUI shows up? Please check in Task Manager if you have Filter Forge in the list of processes.

Does Filter Forge generate an error log? Please search your temp folder for a 'Filter Forge-SSE2.log' file.

(Note that you may have the log after successful runs in the safe mode. Please erase the temp folder, try to run Filter Forge and search for a log file then.)

Eric, could you please post two screenshots:

1) the Startup tab of your System configuration utility (Start > Run > msconfig);
2) the Processes tab of your Task Manager right after a fresh boot.

Something on your computer prevents Filter Forge from starting, and this thing should run at startup.

That did not work. I disabled ObjectDock then rebooted (it went away from msconfig as it should) and no go. Then I reinstalled FF and still no go.

Please search your computer for a file named RarExtLoader.exe.

If you find it, this may be the reason. It's a part of WinRAR, you will need to either delete WinRAR or disable shell integration: WinRAR > Options > Settings > Integration > disable shell integration.

I have exactly the same problem and I have allready tried everything I could think of with no success.
I am running Windows 7 64bit, Radeon 4850. Filter Forge used to work fine on my system but now it's dead. I guess it was some kind of update or maybe graphics driver/directx related installation. Will there be any solution to that problem ever?

guys, try downloading FF again. i've had it happen with downloading any software, not just FF, where you get a partial download and it will even sometimes start the install and you think it's installed and it's not. the first check would be to look at the file size of the download. if it doesnt match up with what the FF website says it shld be, then you've got a bum download. uninstall everything, if it will and download the file again, paying attention to the file size.

also, make sure which version you're talking about here. in version 1.xxx the current version is 1.019. if you dont have that FF may not work and you certainly wont be able to download filters.

if you're talking about version 2.xxx, the beta version, if you dont have the latest version there, i think it's 1.003, it wont work either and will give you a message telling you you have to update it. in that case, download the new ver 2.xxx version and install it directly over your other ver 2.xxx version.
