I've used FF for years, and have updated regularly. I think the last version was 1.015. Anyway, last week I went to start FF and got this error message:

"Could not complete the Filter Forge command because of a problem with the filter module interface."

No idea what that means, and all other filters operate normally. I downloaded and installed 1.018, but that didn't fix the problem.

Uninstall?

------------

While waiting for possible solutions I uninstalled FF and reinstalled it, which didn't help. I restarted the computer, which didn't help.

------------

The standalone version of FF doesn't. No error message, but nothing happens either.

------------

Tried loading in Paint Photo X2 and the error message was:

"Plugin passed bad parameters."

Sort of points to FF as the problem.

Eduardo, if you get these errors when Filter Forge crashes, please send the auto-generated bug report.

And where would this be found?

I see you weren't prompted to generate a report...

Do you have an antivirus, Zone Alarm or Spyware PC Doctor installed? If yes please turn it off and try again.

Yes, I'm running ZA. Do I need to turn this off every time I run FF?

----------

Good grief...that was it. Closed ZA and FF started. That's not good.

I checked the settings for FF in ZA and they were either no access or question marks, so I changed those and now FF starts with ZA running. I'd forgotten that FF accesses the Internet every time it starts, and ZA doesn't recognize it as a safe program.

Someone might want to set a sticky regarding this. There's no way to know about this unless one thinks of ZA and then actually checks the settings.

Glad to see the problem solved!
Eduardo, what particular settings have you changed in ZA? Other ZA users might also want to know how to fix this.

he basically had to allow the firewall (ZA) to let FF through. you open ZA and pick the 'programs' thing and you'll see a list of programs that have tried to access the net. each item will be listed as both a client and a server. you simply have to set those settings to a green checkmark. in fact, for FF, all you have to check is the two to the left, the 'access' setting and you shld be good to go.

also, eduardo, ZA shld have asked you when FF first tried to access the net to let it through. normally, you get a popup from ZA whenever a new program is trying to access the net. so, it either somehow got unset from yours or you dont have that option turned on. it's generally better if you have that option turned on so that this sort of problem doesnt occur in the future. it may even be automatic and you simply killed FF from accessing the net at some point, so, when you get those popups and you want to let that program through and you want it to do so every time you start it up, click on the 'allow' button AND click on the little checkmark box that says to apply this every time.

there are programs i install where i get that popup and i dont allow them access, at least not for that session and there are programs i install that i dont want to ever access the net so i set the 'deny' button and the little checkbox to do this every time. that way you dont have to keep monitoring the program yourself.

That's the interesting thing about this. I should have gotten two pop-ups regarding FF but didn't. The trust levels had question marks, and access and server had red Xs. Both setup and the application were listed multiple times to account for each version. Both the free ZA firewall (which I used for years) and the full suite (which I purchased earlier this year) function the same, but with more features and different interface for the advanced version. I do recommend the suite because it works as well or better than competing anti-virus, anti-malware programs (I've owned many of them) but uses far less resources.

Anyway, perhaps a sticky with Zone Alarm in the title would be useful for those who might have issues with this.

odd, ZA doesnt normally sleep through an installation and not give the popups. but, it apparently did register them, being that it had them listed. quite odd.

It depends. Sometimes it questions an install if there's changes to certain registry keys or permissions, but more often it triggers when the app itself tries to phone home.

Well, one possibility, which is supposition on my part, is that one of the updates from ZA changed the settings, but I have no way of determining this. Otherwise, it would have been a first in some dozen years of using ZA's firewall that there was no pop-up asking to allow or deny.
