In the attached image you see the difference blend of the saturation channels of the two models. As the blend result is not black, the two channels are not the same.

So how is the saturation channel of the HSY model constructed? (The link to the PDF article in the documentation is not working)

The HSY color model is similar, but not equal to HLS one. While the Hue component is the same, the two others are, in fact, completely different. The main purpose of the HSY color model is the elimination of interdependence between the "brightness" and "saturation" values.
As for original paper, please take a look at the HSY.pdf.

Ah.. interesting paper. So you could really use any type of brightness channel in this approach (i.e. max RGB, weighted rgb, median rgb etc). Thanks
