I've noticed that it is not possible to apply a non-repeating gradient to a non-square image.

Shouldn't what I am calling "vertical" here be capable of going across the image with out repeating?

Here is a simple filter to demonstrate. It works fine when the image is square but if you have a non-square image loaded in PhotoShop the gradient will repeat the "long way" on the image.

That has to do with the seamless tiling...Your image is not square so you can try this one from uberzev called Proportional Gradient. It should do the trick.
