I have ff3 running as a stand alone app.
I would like to apply an FF3 effect to a selection (AKA masked area) in a document that I have opened in photo shop. What's the work flow here?

Do I have to run FF3 as a photoshop plugin to do this? or can I somehow export my photoshop doc in some format that would retain the mask (aka selection) and open (import) that into FF3 to apply filter to the selected area of the document?

Thanks for any help.

I think that the only EASY way to apply an FF3 effect to a selection is made with FF3 as a photoshop plugin to do this

BUT I think that could be possible yo do it perhaps in the standalone if you save the selection in the document as an alpha channel (all the saved selections are alpha channels) and then in the standalone FF you must select that alpha channel included in the document

Do not ask me HOW to do this, because I do not know really and have not tried myself, and I is more difficult to do.

Why not choose the easy way and make this inside Photoshop with FF as a plugin?

Is there any reason you may have to prefer doing it in the standalone?

UPDATE

I have found this below that perhaps could be useful for you

When Filter Forge is running as a plugin, Selection reflects the current selection in the host application (such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel PhotoPaint, etc.).

When Filter Forge is running in the standalone mode, the selection can be loaded from an image file via the "File > Open Selection" menu command. The dimensions of the selection image must match the dimensions of the original image. If a color image is loaded as a selection, it will be converted to grayscale.

and here is more detailed

The Selection component provides access to the selection which is currently loaded into Filter Forge. In most graphic editors, the selection is shown as a dotted outline surrounding an area of the image. In Filter Forge, the selection is a grayscale bitmap with selected areas represented by white pixels, deselected areas by black pixels, and 'soft selection' areas by intermediate levels of gray. Selection is a map component, it can be located in the External category on the Components Bar.

When Filter Forge is running as a plugin, Selection reflects the current selection in the host application (such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel PhotoPaint, etc.).

When Filter Forge is running in the standalone mode, the selection can be loaded fr om an image file via the "File > Open Selection" menu command. The dimensions of the selection image must match the dimensions of the original image. If a color image is loaded as a selection, it will be converted to grayscale.

When a filter includes the Selection component but nothing is selected in the host application, or no selection is loaded via the "File > Open Selection" menu command, the component outputs a white image. In this case Filter Forge shows a notification message 'This filter requires a selection' in the filter preview area.

I can't figure out how to install it as a Photoshop plug in. Also concerned about loosing presets if I attempt reinstall. Also I did not want to re download all the filters again

I'm win 7 64 bit with photoshop CS5.1 extented.

I don't remember if or where I'm given a choice to install FF3 as a plugin. Or if it has to done manually by dragging files around

The Filter Forge photoshop plugin is installed automatically IF photoshop is installed already when you are going to install Filter Forge, and it detects very well where it is and shows you it in the install.

Anyway, if it is not installed, the only thing you have to do is copy the 64 bit version of .8bf file of filter forge inside the Photoshop plugins folder and that is all.

Perhaps could be helpful for you this threads where you can see where are the presets and filters and so you can make a backup and do not be afraid to loose them.

Guide to how to backup your FF filters library from your hard drive

Where are the downloaded Filter Forge filters located physically?

Thanks for the help. smile:)

Before I had posted I had tried to drag the 64 bit.8bf file and drop it into the photoshop plugins folder and the 8bf disappeared when I tried that. So I could no longer find that file.
So finally after reading your reply I wound up doing a reinstall at which point the installer detected my 64bit photoshop and I just checked the box next to that. It installed fine and did not loose my filters or presets. So I'm good to go now.

Thanks Again
