Well, this is how software is, and is not only in FF. There are Many other also software that also have filters that if you want to use them you have to pay for the upgrade.
I suposse that you mean that you CAN´T use 3.0 filter on FF 2.0, and that most of the new filters are done for 3.0 instead of 2.0, and is not the problem that happens that you need to UPDATE the FF 2.0.8 to FF 2.0.9. Update and upgrade is different. This has has happened the same as with FF 1.0, when FF 2.0 was released nearly all the new was for 2.0 and if you did not upgrade you could not use them. I know that this could seem to be silly, BUT is not FF Inc. fault and they do NOT do it this way to charge you more money and that you have to pay more for using the filters. Is impossible that FF 2.0 could use FF 3.0 filters because IS MISSING all the new features and changes to the code as you can see here --> http://filterforge.com/features/whats-new3.html And this will happen the same with FF 4.0... UPGRADE NOW WITH A 50% DISCOUNT The only possible way is to upgrade to the new version with the new features, and there is still 3 days with a 50% discount for getting it. Perhaps you can´t afford it, but regretably this is the only way. |

Yes and no...
Also yes and no.... If you make a filter in FF3 that uses only FF2 or even only FF1 components, you still get a FF3 only filter. Look for example at my H-D-Pseudo-R filter. I made it EXACTLY the same in FF2 and FF3, and the filter made in FF3 is compatible ONLY with FF3 (Even if you use only the lifesaver as previews). That way FF Inc makes sure that new filters will not be usable for previous versions even if there's nothing new in them, making users have to upgrade if they want new filters. |

If you read well what I have put, is true that is impossible to USE FF 3.0 inside FF 2.0 and there is NO way to do it, and CAN´T be possible. You wrote "if you make...." and what I mean is about already done and available in the library Other different thing is that having FF 3.0 you can of course make filters for FF 2.0 if you do not use any of the new components of FF 3.0, as the good example is the one you had told about your own filter, BUT then after when submitting it takes the version of the software INSTEAD of looking at the components included, and as is taken only the version, of course that is only a FF 3.0 filter, because you are using the FF 3.0 to submit it. What could be done is make the filter with FF 3.0 and then copy all the components to FF 2.0 and submit the filter form there. Also I think that is NOT ONLY THE NEW FEATURES that makes a filter FF 3.0 ONLY, as far as I know some of the OLD components of FF 2.0 gets a newer version in FF 3.0, so although this component is also available in FF 2.0, is NOT the same because this is another higher version, so it is not compatible downward. You should use the same version of the component in FF 3.0 as in FF 2.0 and then submit it from FF 2.0. |

No, I tried that.
The thing is if you look inside the FFXML file you create there's a little difference in the layout of the tags between FF 3.0 and FF 2.0. That means that even if you are using only old FF 1.0 obsolete components, if you made the filer inside the FF 3.0 filter editor, you can't open the filter in FF 2.0 to submit it. You also can't copy and paste combonents between the editors of the different versions, so if you want to make the filter work in FF2 you have to manualy re-do the filter in FF2 editor. Again, the filter itself contains a line that tells FF which editor version created the filter, so if your FF2 sees a line that says "This filter was created in the editor of FF3" it doesn't even try loading the filter. That is why I try to make my filters in FF2, so it will be FF2 compatible. Then I can open the filter in FF3 and save it as a FF3 filter if I have to. That way people can use the filter with both FF2 and FF3. If I make a filter with a component that is exclusive to FF3, then there's nothing I can do to make it FF2 compatible. Hope those last few lines made sense.... I was basically trying to say I don't use FF3 editor if I don't need a specific component found only in FF3. |

Artemis, over 8000 filters are compatible with FF 2.0, and you are free to download any of them. There is much stuff to discover in the filter library before you are forced to upgrade to 3.0.

What GMM said... I haven't upgraded to version 3 yet but I still use FF many times a week because there are plenty of excellent filters available for that version, I think there may even be more available for version 2 at the moment then there are that are exclusive to version 3. You have to go back a bit to find them, and it's a bit of a bitch because as far as I know there's no way to only see version 2 filters if that's what you're looking for, but they're there. The only ones you can't use are the ones that have a little 3 at the top.

As said by GMM is true that there are many THOUSANDS of filters available for FF 2.0 and I think that perhaps could be difficult to find them in the online Library, BUT there is a very easy way that could work and would be better to find ALL of them.
You have to use the Filter Forge Browser that is inside filter forge, and then it will take you to the online library inside this FF Browser and then it will appear ONLY FF 2.0 filters to download. If you do not know where to find the Filter Forge Browser please see this thread here http://filterforge.com/forum/read.php?FID=5&TID=8939

Lucie is right. Just look at the left up corner of every filter. You will find 3 kinds:
- 3.0 written on the corner. These are the filters made for the 3.0 version, that you cannot use. - 2.0 written on the corner. Filters made for 2.0 version. You can use them. - Nothing written on the corner. Filters made for the 1.0 version. You can use them. ![]() |

I have to agree with GMM and Lucie. With over 8000 filters you can use on FF 2.0, most of the things that are version 3.0 exclusive can still be found.
Sure, some of the 3.0 filters are cool, but for the most part, 2.0 filteres do the job just the same. That's because the masters of filter making have come up with ingenious ways to do pretty much everything the hard way, before version 3.0 came and made it easier for the rest of us ![]() |
