During the installation of FF3 I'm being given the option to import my settings and filters from 2.012. If I elect to do this, do my original settings and filters remain in 2.012, in case I want to use 2.012 for specific filters? In other words, do filters get 'copied' to FF3, or do they get 'moved' ? Thanks.

Copied, though nowhere near seamlessly.

yes, your filers remain using that method. you'd have to manually 'move' (or delete) them to eliminate them from 2.xx. and yes, both versions of FF can remain on the same computer and both shld remain working, even if you add other MAJOR versions. a minor 'update' will overwrite on whatever the current version is, but not a MAJOR UPGRADE. i will also caution a tiny bit on using the auto import feature when installing a new major version. if you have the entire current FF library in your older version, let's say 8000 filters, and you install 3.xx, it's going to take a LONG while for all those filters to copy over and i forget if you get any indication that that copying is going on. i seem to remember going from version 1.xx to 2.xx and wondering what all the delay was when i used the auto-copy feature. it took quite a while. so, it's probably better, with a lot of filters already in your library, to do some manual copying wh ere you know exactly what's going on, or buy the disk of filters and use that. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
