I was thinking of offering up the remainder of my HU reward points for a contest (probably three or four pro copies with lifetime updates).... The subject would be photo-realistic relief painting effect filters....with winners in catagories (1) Most photo-realistic effect, (2) Most artistically original/creative, (3) Best paint stroke variations, and (4) Best technical construction/methods/tricks towards speed and efficiency....
What do you guys think??? Would I get some serious involvement in something like this....or would I be tossing away all my HUs for nothing??? Steve

Well Stevie..IMHO...ok maybe not so humble.
As far as myself I have enough RPs to last for a while..
besides I need to get going on those abstracts again.. Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times!

I don't want anything to hold those beauties up... Carry on... lol...
No offense to anyone or to down their hard work....but to be perfectly honest, there are no filters that photo-realistically emulate painting/brush strokes.... I came up with one, but it is sooooo excruciatingly slow and resource draining, it crashes my computer as well as Carls computer which has dual quad cores.... So, to fastrack and obtain better ideas on how to do it, I thought a contest like this might bring out the filter "savants" to find fast and efficient solutions to this problem.... Steve

StevieJ, I can set up a new forum section for this -- this will allow contestants to post entries in separate threads.

I just want to get some more feedback from authors here before I start moving forward with this....
I would also like to see if some of my "homies" would be willing to donate some 8-HU chunks of reward points (pro copy with lifetime updates) to help this out....and in doing so, maybe become a contest judge???
If I can get additional donations, maybe the contest can be expanded to include a couple other catagories that other authors were previously interested in...like maybe:
1) Photo-realistic Texture
2) Steampunk
3) Brush-Stroke Painting
If not, there are plenty of catagories that can be expanded under just "painting"....
GMM, thank you for that offer....that would help. First, let me see what kind of feedback this gets, additional donations, and help that I can enlist for this....
Also, would FF be willing to donate a pro copy with lifetime updates towards this....with a "say" on the catagory for which it is awarded???
If this looks good, I'll do up a draft of the contest rules (very simple and straightforward)....and post them here for feedback and revisions before going forward... Steve

I got your back Stevie.....I gots plenty of points towards donations to the cause..
One rule that I have is no copying off others papers...I'll be checking..
Or at least to the people submitting.... Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times!

Tenitively looks like this:
Quote |
---|
1) Contest: Painting Effects
2) Prizes: Three FF pro copies with lifetime updates
3) Contest Catagories: (so far)
- Best Photo-Realistic Painting Effect
- Best Creative Effect
- Best Brush Strokes
4) Judges: (so far)
- CFandM
- StevieJ
* Donations of each set of 8 HUs assigns a contest catagory and makes you a Judge...winners chosen by majority vote of judges... |

Wow, Steve, that's very generous of you. I myself have a few spare points, but let me think a little before you sign me up as a judge. I'd really like to see this happen, though.
I have a few suggestions, I can't help myself.
FF is currently running a competition on another website. I'm assuming you'll wait until that one is over? Also, the prize for that one is only basic edition, and 3 RP's can get you the professional edition, priced over $100 more. But you can certainly offer 8 RP's for lifetime upgrades if you like.
Also, in the above competition, each contestant submits five FF-altered photos. Are you looking for actual filter files where you can compare filters with the same images, or leaving it up to the contestants to choose their own photos?
May I offer suggestions for the categories? I assume that you are specifically looking for paint effect filters. "Photo-realistic" and "brush strokes" are too similar IMO. And "creative" seems too broad. Maybe genre or medium-specific categories, like "watercolor" or "abstract"?

It would seem and only right to wait for contests that FF is running to come to their conclusions before running this one...Yep me to I would like to see this one going..Since there was talk before and they just kinda got sidetracked.... Doesn't have to....but no problem if FF would like it to run afterwards....

My thinking is that lifetime pro copies and multiple catagories will be a much better draw to enter....and a more worthwhile return on efforts...

Thinking just the filters because not about an authors creative ability to apply them....

That could be possible....think HU contributors would want final say in catagories....good suggestions though...

That's probably what FF would like to see as well....
HU contributors and potential contestants....don't be shy....would like to hear from you....and any ideas you may have.... Steve

so, how you going to do this? i mean, mechanically, what's the plan? you going to take FF's offer of using a sub-forum and regardless of that, how are you going to do the submissions? do they submit to the library first and you judge fr om there or do they submit to the forum first? FF seems up for this, so a transfer of points shldnt be a problem, but you're going to need to coordinate all this with FF, inc. a bit. will others donating their HU's transfer them to you first or to one of the persons that win. and who is going to give their HU's up first or do you have only as many categories as there are pro/lifetime versions?
oh, and can anyone enter, including us bums that already have HU's? i mean, it seems a bit weird to take your HU's from you when i already have my own, but at the same time i like contests. so, is there a lim it to who can enter? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

yes...

I would suggest contestants email filters to one or all judges....no posting of filters in forum....sample pics and comments only...will be up to all judges on how to proceed since they have donated a prize...

No lim it....just have to have aty least trial version of FF to create filter entries...
So Craig, I know you have 8 HUs just lying around and collecting dust....how about it....get to be a judge and help determine contest parameters....and best of all, you'll at least get 8 HU paint filters back to play with as a minimum return on your contribution??? You're not going to let us have all the fun are you???
Cheekus Erectus!!! I know you are reading this....c'mon....cough'em up!!! lol... Steve
