last night my computer died. apparently the motherboard is fried. so, i went out and got a new motherboard, case and cpu. since the old machine was an oem windows xp machine, how is this going to affect my installation of FF? will i need a new download and cd key or what? i'm most likely going to have to install a full version of windows xp home, which i already have, and that the oem version is not going to work on the new mobo and cpu. so, that means a new registry and probably even a new c: partition for the new version of windows. i'm still using all my old harddrives, including the partition (not C:) that has FF on it. but since a new install of windows means a new registry, how is that going to affect FF. i'm fairly i can just save out the stuff in documents and settings and re-use that part, but what about the engine and executable?

For one I hate when mobos fry. Unless there is sparks and flames then its kinda cool looking for a moment or two. Since you are installing a fresh copy of windows you might want to also install a fresh copy of FF. That way it writes the registry keys and knows where to look for things. May save you a headache or two also. Its just something personaly I do when re-installing. Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times!

Make sure the "%appdata%\Filter Forge" is in-place, install FF, get a key, by contacting our support team (although you'll have trial period, so you'll be able to work while support gives you a key).

well, after much hassle, a LOT of lost hair and some rather cross words with the store guys, i've got my new system back. what a nightmare!
it seems to be a pretty nice system, but i've got a LOT of old stuff to put back on there, including filter forge. i'm currently still formatting partitions that werent done at the store but the basic system is up and running. still no internet setup or protections yet so i'm writing this all on my other (win98se) system.
and that raises an interesting question; does FF work with win98 and win98se? i dont want to really get it for my win98 system, but i was just curious.
for those interested, it's a new case with 4 front drive bays, new 350 watt power supply, new gigabyte 64 bit motherboard, new amd 3500 cpu and a new sata II, 250 gig harddrive. i'm adding back 3 ide drives and two optical drives. one harddrive is on a pci sata/ide expansion card. so, 6 drives giving me almost a half a terrabyte of storage space that shld last about 6 months before i need another
it's going to take a while to set everything back up and get a new copy of FF but i'll get there.

hi vlad
yes, it's about twice as fast as my last machine, a 1.7 ghz rig
ok, i'm back on my new machine now. got the net stuff set up with some minimal protections for now. got a ton of stuff to re-install, but one of the first was FF.
what i did to get FF going again was i had the saved original download and just ran that again over top of the last installation. heh, that wasnt too bright and you got a send error report in on that one. so, i uninstalled that and installed it again in a new location. seems overwriting a later version with an earlier version isnt too smart
once i had the new install in (the old version), i ran FF and it upgraded me to the new version. i then downloaded all the filters in the library. after that i made a very simple filter and saved it and that created the 'my filters' file in FF. i then just copied all my files from the old 'my filters' to the new one and that worked fine. i was a bit surprised there. it seems you're now storing the presets with the 'my filters' rather than in that previous directory 'my presets' or whatever it was named. anyways, the presets were all there with my old 'my favorites'.
i then had to recover my old emails, particularly the one that had my cd key on it. and that's where i am right now. i have not tried to enter that key yet. i wanted to ask if that would work or not. it would save you guys having to send me a new key. i know my account number. i know the key and i'm pretty sure the name i need to enter with the key is 'kraellin', but i wasnt sure about all this and thought i would ask first since i've got 30 days to do this. no need to rush it and screw something up in doing so. so, will the information in that approved for testing email work for entering into this new install or shld i just get a new one? i suppose i could always just try it and if it doesnt work do another re-install if needed.
oh, and one of the reasons i was tempted to just enter the old key is that i dont have all my email stuff set back up yet. gotta get all that pop3 data, accounts, and so on. only thing on outlook express that i've recovered so far is the .dbx files of the folders and previous mails. but i'm working on it.
let me know how you want me to go.

And, if I remember the AMD product line correctly, your new CPU is dual-core. If so, Filter Forge should be very fast on this setup. Just make sure that you use all available cores (Tools > Options > Rendering > Multithreading > "Use All Available Cores").

yup. quite a bit faster and i havent even turned up the frequency yet. it's still set at 200/100 (2 ghz). the manual says i can go to something like 400/150 (4.5 ghz). the processor is an amd athlon 64 processor, socket 939, 3500+. in actual fact, it seems to be a single core. there's no mention of dual core anywhere i can find. but regardless, FF runs significantly faster now
oh, and vladimir, can i just use my old authentication key i got in an email months ago or do i need a new one?

Yes, you can use the old key, the beta keys work with all beta updates (obviously, they won't work with the commercial version when it is released).

thanks vlad. is all done now
still sorting out bugs on the new machine, though. had to find an earlier version of zone alarm, for one. and still havent got decent sound either. it just wont go up in volume like it shld. and the guy that installed the drives and windows, for some reason made the system drive K: instead of C:. not going to try to change that last one but it may come back to haunt me if someone hardwires their paths.
