Not interested in playing, just want to see what passes for the best in textures, dynamics and cutscenes.
I assume pc games are better than console games, and that all console games will run on a pc but not vice-versa – is that true?
Are there clear advantages, with regards to textures, dynamics or cutscenes, to the sony or ms consoles?
When I stopped playing ftl and id were my favorite makers - who are the best now?
Btw, I do not have a console but I can probably find hd examples on youtube.

It depends, but generally, look to PC for the bleeding edge.

actually, the consoles have nearly put the pc games out of business. the last few times i've been in gamestop, the pc games were all on one small rack and the rest of the store was all console stuff. there's also a giant web-based gaming industry now, also.

a few years ago the consoles started passing the pcs in sheer raw rendering power. when the ps3 was about to hit the stores for the first time i saw a video showing the rendering power of that new beast. it was utterly amazing. most of the rendering was being done in real time as opposed to pre-made graphics that one had to load off a harddrive. and it wasnt just some tiny little low resolution type thing; it was full-blown, oh my god, high quality, high res, gritty, near real looking scenery with tons of things going on, like helicopters flying while bombs were going off and things were blowing up while and infantry squad was shouting and so on. it was mind-blowing stuff.

now, that's not to say that pcs arent more powerful, what with quad core 2 duos and the new macs coming out with 12 actual and 24 virtual cores. but, the consoles have been leading the surge for a while now.

but, one of the biggest pluses for the consoles development is, they're harder to pirate the software and developers love that. parents also tend to prefer to buy their kids a $200 to 400 game system as opposed to a $400 to $2000 computer system.

so, all in all the market is mostly consoles these days. i dont like it, but if i want to play cutting edge i'm probably going to have to buy a console. you can still find pc games, but not like you used to. the golden age of the pc game machine is dead.

Thanks ronjonnie and tigerAspect, that was very helpful.

Would the typical game engine include its own dynamics solution or would it incorporate over-the-counter apps like realflow or houdini?

I don't know Craig, even a 400usd game card probably has more power than either console.
I did notice on a recent visit to walmart that they had the console games under lock-and-key, while the pc games were in the open. I thought that was interesting.

well, i havent done any comparisons in the last couple of years, so most of my comparison is based on that pre-release ps3 video i saw. but, i havent heard of anyone in the pc field developing real-time rendering so far, so i dont know. but, what i said about gamestop is quite true... one little rack of pc games and most of the new releases were online type games. and, since i still buy a game now and then for the pc, i can attest that the selection available at any given time is less than it used to be. consoles are king right now.

oh, and one other advantage the consoles have, the game stores will take returns and even will buy used console games because of the difficulty in pirating. so, the game retail stores like em better too.

This looks expensive. Apparently it does everything proprietary - dynamics, terrain, rigging, everything.

Hey Everyone,

Good info. tigerAspect & Craig. I haven't played PC computer games in many years.
We went through many $ with other systems then PS2 & on up to PS3. Graphics are AWESOME!
Depends of course on the game. I might be getting, I hate to say old...but I still LOVE to play a good game! Now, once you finish the game you can go online & continue the battle! Here is another shot of the same game as above. Grab your seat!

Oh, & before I forget...with the Playstation 3, when you go online, as it is a computer...get ready for this ok...go to Filter Forge.com..our FAVORITE station, & pull up any textures...I hate to promote mine ok...& CHECK them OUT on the BIG screen!!!! They will BLOW you AWAY!! smile:loveff: I do that ever so often to just experience the beauty of it all! Truly a AWESOME experience! We have come a long way since PacMan!
We had the old Atari systems also...If we had all the money we spent on games..I would be retired! LOL! smile:D A man has got to have a little fun, now & then!

You just have to love it! smile:)

Have a good evening. smile:)

Not for a while yet. Although I have been spending my weekends working on a greeble project inspired by the Blevins thread. I will post something when I get that a little further along.

Btw Beliria, how happy are you with your new computer? If I remember correctly you got the i7 with 8gb and a radeon 57xx, on window7 64. Is that correct? Do you use it for games?

True. but we have a helluva long way to go before we're rendering this in realtime.

ronjonnie is that screen grab from gameplay or a cutscene?

Correct on the i7 and window7 64 part, but is nvidia graphics GTS 250 and um 12gb

had to send it back to the builders last month, the power box blew so was back on my older pc the 0 core one with 1gb ram and xps3, was like wow okay this is super slow!
Granted still have issues with some programmes with the new pc. Like expecting them to render images faster but if they are doesn't seem like it. Mind I did do some terragen images, ones that would have taken nearly 24hours+ to render on my old pc took about 3+ hours on this one depending on how much water was involved. That and some images sizes I would never have tried to render using FF I have with this newer machine, ones that are around 5,000 pixel's plus in size.

So yep happy with the new machine, would be happer still if more programmes I had could make use of the machines power rather than just using little bit of it. But then I would have to fork out a lot to get the newer versions of those software which is totally out of the question for the time being smile:(

smile:D me use my pc for gaming... Never!! Never!! ....coughs.... mmorpg's mainly, also have the sims 3 but depends what mood am in to play that, and I still go into Second life.

Thanks for that link ronjonnie, I just gave it a thorough going-over. Any gamer is going to come away from there wanting to play that game. I’m not sure, but they may use actual movie stars for the voices in those trailers – the blond sounded vaguely familiar. I liked how our hero wakes up bloody and in a rail car that is dangling over a cliff. Reminded me of when I woke up at seventy mph to the sound of the back of my car slamming into a road sign on the interstate. smile:angel:
I tried to find the game engine that was used but I’m not familiar enough with gaming terminology yet.

It sounds like you have a very good system. Too bad about the problems but there almost always is. Glad to hear you're happy with it overall. I'm going to be purchasing a new one but I need some hardware to mature(sata6gb,ssd,usb3), so I'm putting it off as long as possible. Still getting by on the used pc I got for 600usd on ebay - mental ray will eventually force the issue. smile:-p

clever site for uncharted 2. i like the 360 view with the 'hidden' menu items. and it looks like a well rendered game. i've resisted the temptation to get a ps3 or x-box for a while now, but when i see promos like these i start drooling and that always leads to a lighter wallet smile:)
