Having prepaid for version 2, I find myself between a rock and a hard place. As a rule, I don't like running betas of anything on my system. The betas for 2.0 are up to .003 with more betas promised in the future. If I understand the licensing terms correctly, each beta is time limited, and subsequent versions will each require a new key. If these were the only considerations, I'd pass and wait for the (belated) 2.0 final release. However, there's another issue. Most of the recent filters require 2.0, and I haven't found any information about the consequences or feasibility of collecting some of these filters with 1.x for future use. A revised release timetable would be of great help in my decision making.
If someone were to buy the product today, would they get a 2.0 beta or 1.x version with full upgrade to 2.0 included? Also, I'm not sure I admire the practice of advertising time-limited discounts and continuing the discounts past their deadlines by renaming the offer, especially when the newer offers are better than the ones that had previously expired.

i can answer part of that from my own experience with the FF2 beta. you do NOT use your FF1 key with FF2. you use the contact form and write to FF, inc. and request a beta 2 key. that key has worked for EVERY stage that's come out without me having to input it again as each new release comes out.
as to the rest, i cant really answer. i could guess but it would only be a guess.
oh, and FF2 filters will NOT work in FF1. and as for collecting FF2 filters now while using FF1, can you even do that? can you download FF2 filters now when you only have FF1? i'm curious. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

There will be the beta stage 4, then (possibly) the RC and finally the commercial version no later than in June 2010.

It's impossible due to the new features in FF2.0 -- the file formats are different.

Just purchased FF2.0, and am looking forward to it in the final stage. Right now, I just move between FF1.0 and FF2.0 depending upon what I'm doing, but either way have been enjoying the product.
My only wobbly not is with licensing definition. I travel a great deal, but have it loaded only onto my desktop. Is it ok to have it loaded onto my desktop and my laptop for when I'm traveling (the way Photoshop allows). Thanks!

ghilayne,
we've discussed with the developers the idea of single user licensing and single machine licensing. i think, if i remember correctly, they were not totally against the idea of single user, but i think that currently, it's a single machine license. you shld always read the end user license to be sure of this. i am not a lawyer, nor am i a representative of FF, inc. so, read the eula for the exact licensing.
and, you could always put FF1 on your desktop and put FF2 beta on your laptop (at least until the final release) If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Ghilayne mentions having purchased FF2. How did you do that?
I did not test it yet, but from what I read there are some great additions. I hesitate, whether I should buy FF1 now, would almost prefer to wait for 2.0. Experienced users, please advise!

We will start to accept "public" preorders for Filter Forge 2.0 next week. But if you purchase FF1 now you will be able to preorder an upgrade now — there is an upgrade offer for existing customers.

Thank you for answering so fast GMM!
The unsecurity comes from here:
I do not absolutely need the tools of Professional Edition 1, but do not know, what Professional Edition 2 will encompass. Does upgrade work from Standard Edition 1 to Professional Edition 2, just in case?
The second question is about price. To buy now is a bet, that current price + upgrade offer for existing customers is equal or less than preodering FF2 next week...
The way to FF2 from here still lies in the dark. Any hints?
Let the children play. :-)

You can download and test the FF2 Beta for 30 days free of charge — this is a fully-functional 2.0 Professional Edition. You can install FF1 and 2.0 Beta alongside on one computer.

Not sure what you mean by 'work' here, but of course you can upgrade your FF1 Std to FF2 Pro.

Exactly: equal or less.
