I learned by just taking them apart making sure to move all the sliders around while observing what happened. Taking apart filters is a good way to learn. Start with the simpler ones at first.

Good Luck smile:)
at least 90 percent of all sensation is texture, even beyond the visual, with elements of noise, tone, gradients, interval and degree.

(smart-ass answer following: please be prepared for sarcasm, irony, jibes and other forms of smart-ass behavior smile:D )

here's my tutorial: get demo, open editor, try to plug everything into everything and see what happens. submit to library. rinse, repeat!

actually, (smart-ass part over), a good beginning FF book would be a good thing. lots of examples of GUI, editor and resulting textures. i could write one, but would there be enough demand to warrant it?

Craig,

GREAT idea!! Lets hear it from the forum!
All those in favor of Crapadilla writing a Filter Forge handbook, or maybe: Crapadilla Tips & Tricks, lets have a show of response, even better, how about Filter Forge pays him to do it!
Now we're talking! What do you think Val?

Have a GREAT day! smile:)

Well, until someone rises to the challenge of writing a whole book on FF, we still do have the WIKI! It's just that it needs better visibility and people need to use it more!

You know, I always liked the fact that when a small FF tip crossed my mind, I could just quickly create a wiki article on it. If more people were writing wiki articles (and there are quite a few technically and artistically skilled forum members around who could and should), we'd have our whole book sooner or later, one article at the time!

Then there's the forum search, which also might turn up some gold nuggets here and there, for example: Clicky!

In my post in that thread I tried to convey a structured approach to filter creation, namely thinking in terms of visual problems and breaking them down into smaller problems to be solved individually. We - the FF community - could follow a similar approach: If everyone were to write a small article on a small visual problem (a mini-tutorial, if you will), then we'd have a whole cookbook of filter building "recipes" in no time!

Some examples of small 'visual problems':

- How do I create a circle?
- How do I create a solid layer of color?
- How do I create an outline for my arbitrary shape?
- How do I color an image?
- How do I scale/rotate an image?

etc.

We could use one image and one paragraph of text per 'visual problem'. I imagine this cookbook would be of great help to FF newcomers since they mostly don't think in terms of FF components, but rather in terms of visual 'goals' (like creating a circle). Consequently, it is a matter of showing which components are the right tools for achieving these visual goals.

Alrighty, I've gone ahead taking my own medicine and started a Beginner's Cookbook on the wiki! All suggestions and contributions are very welcome!

It took me about 60 minutes to write up two draft articles, so I think this may be a format well suited to the more casual types of contributors. *hint hint* smile:D

Crapadilla,

A very outstanding move on your part!
Looks like we got the ball rolling! I wish only that Filter Forge would pay you for your time and effort in this endeavor! How about that Vladimir, Is it possible that Crapadilla could have some compensation for all of his time & effort? I feel that Filter Forge should really have some type of a published hand book, at least in a .pdf download. Just my feelings, please don't shoot the messenger! smile:D

Have a GREAT day! smile:)

Very nice fomat Dilla, easy to follow, to the point.

I will try to write one or two snippets. I like the idea of showing multiple solutions to the same problem.

Please do so! It would be great if more people were actively working to expand the wiki. smile:)
