Hello, I am new here,
Recently i bought filter forge, and I blame Epic for this, Yes it is all their fault! Because they released unreal engine for free. So I really needed fast way to make plain, tileable textures, and filter forge is perfect tool to make that stone, brick or metal texture i need now, when i cannot wait 2 weeks for our slave (texture artist) to make one. Sadly most of filters in online gallery do not suit next gen (buzzword) game needs. I can use about half of them after some modification. Those are usually minor ones like adding normal map and specular possibility, or a bit more control over details. My question is: Can i share modified filters back or i need ask author for permission? |

Hi and welcome!
The best idea would be to contact the original filter creator and ask. Some might be a little upset if they didn't get a high usage on the original if they see a slight modification become popular. In these cases the best solution would probably be to send them the modified filter in private and ask them to post an update. Others might have already gotten a "high usage" point from that particular filter and don't care at all. They'll usually be OK if you post a modified version of the filter either as an attachment in the filter comment thread or as a new submission. Others might not respond at all. In this case I'd say it's fine to post modded filters if they were HU, if not, use your judgement and be sure to credit where it's due. ALL THAT SAID: You're free to do whatever you wish with the filters as long as you don't simply re-post an existing filter with new presets. As long as you post with the intent to enrichen the library I'm sure you'll be fine. |

this has been a tricky one at times. the eula's pertain, but FF, inc. has rejected some filters for being very close copies. one author even got pretty much shamed into leaving for doing too many close copiess. authors have also asked to have close copies removed and i believe FF normally sides with the original author. however, FF, inc. is the authority here, not me. so, go by whatever they say.
i will add this, i have submitted spinoffs of other author's works and FF was fine with it. i usually asked the original author or at least notified them and i also did 'significant' alterations if i was going to submit to the library AND, and this may be the most important part, i always gave credit to the original author in the description of the filter. ALWAYS! now, all that being said, if you're just going to make a minor change, i wouldnt even submit it to the library. i'd post it in the forums with full credit to the original author, or, i wouldnt even post it at all; i might just say what i did if it's really minor and others can then follow suit and nobody gets hurt ![]() so, mostly, just think about who is or isnt going to get hurt and who is or isnt going to be made happy by your intended action(s). and, having just looked at KG's response to you, the 'high usage' point is very important. the only time i've ever gotten pissed at another author was when that person posted a filter, which was a definite spinoff of one of mine, before mine had had a shot at going HU. it just seemed like a blatant attempt to rob my filter of use and attention, or if not blatant and intentional, then certainly inconsiderate. so, it can be a touchy area. even by posting in the forums you may be robbing the original of getting attention in the library. but, if the original has already gone HU, why, there may be no fuss at all. here's a link of modded filters. maybe that will help: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/se...mod+of&h=r If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Thank you for clarification, my goal is to make textures, modified filters are just byproduct of that process. I share only ones that are great improvement (after asking author) or that are mine entirely.
I may post collection of those filters later, such game textures package could be useful. |
