Hello peeps
Im posting my 1st post here because i need some help and i cant find the awnser myself I had to reinstall FF on Win7.. But HOW do i keep the FF filters save for next time.. I hate redownloading 400+ filters again .. I had made some backup but i missed things orso they wont show up.. What do i need the backup for next time.. And little 2nd Question the Online download is fine for keeping up with new filters... But for 400+ its way to much hassle.. So i used the "obsolete" online from within FF ... thats what its called in FF ![]() That goes Soso ..but it taskes AGES before the list is made.. And then AGES before the thumbs are loaded .. And to make it even more unfriendly .. evertime i see a "preview thumnail not loading" error the whole download page Quits and all is lost... ![]() Sure there must be a good fast en secure way to get the filters i need back without it taking 2 days or more... Thnx for any advice ![]() Chris B. BAR-CODE |

Press CTRL+L and save those files. Then when restoring just open it again and dump the saved files there.
Do this once for the "My Filters" Folder and one more time for the normal library filters. That should do it. (Right?) |

Chris, welcome to Filter Forge!
Right. The library filters are located in %APPDATA%\Filter Forge\System\ (by default it is C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Filter Forge\System). 'My filters' are located in %APPDATA%\Filter Forge\My Filters (by default it is C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Filter Forge\My Filters). |

Well, you can purchase the whole filter library on a CD for just EUR 14.95. This is the most speedy way I can think of. An alternative would be to use the built-in filter browser. Instead of downloading the 400 filters at once try downloading by smaller portions, for example, select 50 filters and download them, then repeat. |

Well ..after HOURS of fruitless trying and fail .. i give up..
The re downloading of a lot of Filters is a NO GO from the server here... Every time i get thumbnail errors and all quit.. And when i try downloading just a couple at a time.. the downloads stop becuase of some thumbnail preview error .. and the download stops and all quits again.. So all that rests me is downloading 400 a 500 filters one by one ... Can some one FIX the server thats giving these d@%* errors .. Such a pitty.. EDITED for X post .I am using the internal filter browser thats the one killing my day ... even at 15 filters a time .. |

wait, you're downloading the same filters over and over again? that shldnt happen, ever! it sounds like something in windows 7 is screwed up, maybe a permissions thing? i know vista had troubles like this with some stuff. check your folder location where the filters are being downloaded to and see if there's something blocking permissions. i dont have win7 yet, so i cant advise you exactly, but i dont think this is a server issue or a library download issue, per se. i think this is most likely on your end and with it being win7, which is completely new, it wouldnt surprise me if it's a persmissions thing.
but, it could even be worse than that. sorry, i dont like being the harbinger of doom here, but if you've got a harddrive going bad, i've seen that exact condition of downloading something and it not truly saving because the harddrive is screwing up. if it's a completely new machine, hardware and win7, then it's like NOT this. but, if it's an older machine you've had for a couple years and used a lot and you just put win7 on as an upgrade, it could be the drive failing. also, what's your internet connection like? are you on dial-up, wireless, dsl, cable, satellite or what? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I have to redownload the filters ..because i had no idea how to save them..
I did save some files but it seemed i needed to save more files.. I changed from Xppro to Win7Pro And so i needed to reinstall everything.. Im on a 120MB/Sec connection And i have all rights in WiN 7. Vista Sp3 ,Xp pro sp3, MAC Snowleopard But im still trying on Vista system and via a MAC .. and ALL yes ALL .. Give me the same errors from the Filterforge servers .. A preview thumnail that wont load or download... the problem is NOT on my side of the line the problem is with the server at FF site I tryed 5 or 10 or 20 at a time.. its a random error with dowloading or even loading a preview in the internal browser They load slow slower slowest ever .. and then i get a thumb preview error and all DIE's and the browser closes .. I tryed now from 4 computers and all the same result.. Im now dowloading one by one ..for HOURS now.. So im 500% sure its not on my side of the line .. FF site's filter server is behaving badly .. ok, i use this method exclusively and it works for me just fine, both in filter forge version 1.xx and 2.xx. i have two computers with both 1 and 2 on each and each one can and does download just fine from the sever. yes, the server does get goofy sometimes, maybe once a month or so, and if you log in around 11:30 p.m. central standard time, you may experience delays due to the site being backed up and/or maintenance, but other than that the server is working fine. i checked it earlier and had no problems whatsoever. so, i am once again suggesting that something odd is going on on your side of things. are you running your computers through a firewall and a router? have you run a tracert to the site to see if there is a throughput problem? are you running double firewalls? is your isp blocking/censoring something? is your anti-virus doing an active scan of your downloads? are you running any active security scanning, as in some of the anti-malware software? i can click on and download 1000 or more filters at a time with no errors. i exclusively use the 'obsolete' method found in the options and it works just fine. i use this method on all four instances of FF and it shld not take hours. i have a 6.0 dsl connection. also, filters are saved automatically when downloaded. you dont have to do anyhthing special. and the filters once downloaded are instantly available to FF; you dont even have to reboot, like in some programs. just click on the categories in the upper left of FF. also, one last thing... you can usually tell when the server is acting up as you'll start to see posts in the forums here about cant download, cant connect, etc. we're not getting any of those currently. so, if all of your computers are running through the same internet connection/modem/router, i'd seriously check out your win7 configurations for this because if all four computers are runniing through the same net connection system and you're getting the same download errors on all four and others are connecting just fine, then it shld be your configuration is screwy or your throughput to the server is being stalled somewhere. a tracert shld find where, if that's the case. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Why don't you just download the filters as you need them?
The online library is a lot more browse friendly than filterforge. I usually go here first regardless of whether I already have the filter or not. Its usually faster for me to just assume I don't already have a filter than to try to look around the clunky (sorry, but it kinda is) filter browse interface that filterforge has. |

I had tryed and tested this from 3 dif. connections.. and all the same result.
Errors downloading Preview/thumbnails etc etc.. So its 300% sure not on this side of the line. And it has nothing to do with Win 7 .. because i have the same problem on a XP pro system A Vista System ... so setting etc etc are ruled out.. I did run a Computershop for 10+ years .. im not new to PC's But im downloading one by one from the site now... ![]() ![]() And maybe a extra option can be made to the browser pages on the site.. A extra Box just to select downloads "like the internal one" without the "Open in FF " extra clicks.. So its easy to download multiple filters .. just a idea.. ![]() Thnx for the help so far guys.. ![]() I know now how to save the filters once i downloaded them .. But its a pitty is taking me 2,5 days now to do it.. ![]() Chris |

hi chris,
yes, i didnt think it was win7 either after you mentioned the other three computers, but i'm just using the kitchen sink method to try and find what's going on. seeing that you just recently posted this morning, i loaded FF and tried to download again. i picked about 30 filters and they downloaded in about 20 seconds. so, at least for my throughput route, there is no server problem. are all your comptuters going through the same router or firewall? are they proxied? are they all on a Lan? if it's not the computers and it's not the server at FF (because i just tried it and it worked fine) then it's got to be what's going on between your computers and the server and that means modem, routers, firewalls, isp, other connections/nodes along the route from you to the server. did you try a tracert to the server or to this site? in the FF 'tools - options - online tab' are you using the 'automatic (recommended)' setting or one of the others? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I just tryed again from within the program .. and the loading of the previews was fast "being weekend i thought it would be" .. but
Trying to download some ..AGAIN i see this message and all quits.. ![]() Thats a error i cannot do anything about.. thats not on this side of the line. I always use auto setting .. because the routers here switch often.. Thats the price of having loads of computer stuff.. lol And i even tryed 2 other routers ..to no succes.. The strange thing is i never had this before.. i was always able to get the filters .. Just now these errors popup all the time... And i kept track this time.. from a attemt of getting 65 filters in 5 try's i got 5 downloaded.. It actualy looks like time outs from the server.. Specialy because i get these error also when getting the preview thumb for the browser.. So nothing I can do about it i gues.. So .. i think ill just do the one by one .. ![]() Because this is not goign to work so far .. Thnx Graig and the rest |

Just to ad some "proof" that is a problem on FF side..
I had the same error over and over again .. it contained a file number 6863,1 .. so i checked and found out it was the filter named "the ring to rule em all" in the Misc. folder... Once i manualy on the site dowloaded THAT specific filter .. The error in the internal browser was gone, when i clicked hide dowloaded filters. So the thumbnail was not dowloaded anymore .. and the error and crash was gone.. The same errors stayed for un named files btw... So here you go .. nothing the customer can do about Bad files on a server RIGHT ![]() Chris |

Nope, I read it. It's usually more helpful to just answer the question too than just assume the other party didn't read a thread. But... I still don't really see the need to pre-download all the filters. You didn't mention that you were going to keep the computer off-line which is the only case I'd see a need to download so many at once. If you are able to download them one by one just do so as you find the need (it doesn't take that much longer than finding them in filter forge itself) and eventually you'll have everything back that you needed. I also wouldn't suggest posting errors when using the obsolete browser. It's called that for a reason and is obviously not supported properly. |

very odd, chris. you'd think others would have been having the same problem if it was a truly bad file. quite odd.
so, is it working faster now? can you download multiples again? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Yes i can now download 10 at a time .. and the file error is gone "as long as i click HIDE already downloaded" so the thumb aint needed.
But on other system other OS other router ..the same error popups untill i do the same trick.. But i now have ALL files i needed again .. Thnx Graig for the help .. and ik like to say this FILTER FORGE IS THE VERY BEST IN ITS KIND !! The fact i had some troubles getting my filters back does not change that ![]() I have now clicked Crtl L and saved the Files to a ZIP .. I sure hope that was the last time i had to do this haha ![]()

well, i'm glad it's at least better. still strikes me as odd, but since i dont have any more suggestions, maybe the official tech support can lend an ear here.
