Just read a request for a seamless tile that would emulate the look of the stainless steel backgrounds used widely for old diners and hot dog carts. Probably would be a fast HU for somebody. smile8)

Stainless steel with a diamond pattern and some puffiness in the areas inside the diamond embossing.

My stab at this is up: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/7412.html

I misremembered your request and did it as brushed metal, but that's removable.

that's actually pretty good, tiger, but that kind of stamped metal is not that well defined, at least as i remember it. your squares are too perfect. it's more of hills and valleys thing without the sharp definition. i'd have to check the scale again, but i think yours might be a bit large that way. try a google image search. i'm sure it's available. i just dont know the proper name for it... cart metal? stamped metal? plate metal? stainless plate? hot dog metal?

Ah, finally some good reference. Thanks.
As far as i can tell, the squares themselves are well-defined, but the heightmap is rounded, not square. Is that more what you're after?

yes, the squares are fairly well defined, but not like you had it. that was too sharp on the squares. you're in the ballpark; just look at those pictures i linked to. they're pretty good examples of 'hot dog cart metal'... that's what i used as a search in google images.

the shape is more like this, but in metal colors:

and on a diagonal, of course.

also, be careful when looking at those hotdog carts. some are done in diamond plate and some in cut metal rather than stamped. the biggest difference in cut and stamped is that the cut will be smooth where the stamped will have a pattern.

I think I'm closer the the "correct" shape with this version. I can't seem to get rid of the final blur step to get rid of the sharp edge artifacts, this results in a less square corner. I'm not sure if that's an issue though.

ok, now you're really close! those squares look much better... not so sharp. i'd say drop the height on the light parts just a bit and you've mostly got it. add roughness to suit, if warranted. if that's a surface type, then just changing the lighting might be enough of a height drop to get it.

Like this?
(I also tightened up the corners.)

That last one is very close to the right look. Most of the diner/hot dog stainless I recall seeing was more of a taller than wide height to width ratio though as in this picture:

yup, that's very close. look at fred's last picture at the middle left of the image, the side panel of the upper part of the cart. that's what i'd shoot for. yours still looks a bit too high in the height. that metal is actually pretty flat on the cart. i know it's tricky to get the reflection without adding the apparency of more height but you really are close.

I say also less reflection blur, 25-33? It's turning out good so far smile:)

It's closer now.
I'm having a hard time getting the height down without it getting blurry. The reflection blur is at 0 and the Surface Height is at 1 in this preview.
It seems to be a function of FF itself, so I'm not sure what else I can do without faking the reflections outright.

I think what you need is for there to be a tile type bevel coming out of the seams that then transitions into a flat surface. Then finish it off with a shiny slightly brushed metal look.

you're so close i can practically feel it. since you said it's a surface type filter, try cutting the whites on the height map down. maybe with a threshold or levels component. that shld knock the whites down and flatten things a bit. also, check your hdri lighting. the hdri can sometimes impose a false height to things. try different ones.

if you look at fred's last posted image again, on the left side, middle, down on the middle of the cart, the little part that sticks out and has trays in it, that panel on there shows the metal without reflections. you might try for that, instead of the higher reflected parts. that might make it easier to drop the height apparency.

Aack, I think I'm really close now.
This version actually runs the height though Circular Arc twice, to get it as close to flat as possible while still providing a smooth transition.
