I'm thinking of making a partition on my 640gig HD for FF and some other programs that make a lot of temp files. What's a good size to set it? 10gig? 20gig?...

I would think as much as you could spare on the drive...But I always used another physical drive for scratch disks and temp files...
20 or 40 sounds like a good number.. smile:)

there's no way to advise you with the data given. 'other programs' could be anything. how much of the drive are you currently using and how much is free space? and when you say 'temp files', i assume you're going to erase those at some point, but what are they and when are you going to erase? also, remember, the largest part of FF is not where you install the program, but where 'my filters' is located. for most of us, that is in c: . i dont even recall if you can put that on another drive or not. my 'my filters' is about 3 gigs when i back it up completely, if that helps.

Sorry I wasn't more specific... I was kind of in a hurry.

I just built this computer last week. I partitioned the HD to give 80gigs to Vista and essential stuff. If I decide to dedicate a partition for this stuff I'll have programs like FF, Blender, and PSP using it for temp files. With FF right now, I can select my D: drive for temp files but don't know how to specify a folder. I'll be doing a lot of big renders and animations and don't know if I want to have those temp files on C:. I'd like to get a seperate drive but can't afford it right now ( just spent all my money on this build ).

the way i've been leaning on this stuff lately is, i put windows and windows related software on c: . that means the security stuff, firewall, anti-virus and so on. c: is my windows drive, then.

on d: i put all my graphics PROGRAMS. note that i capitalized that. DATA, i put on another partition, when possible. thus, psp and photoshop are on d: but all the images get saved in f: . i also have a partition dedicated to music software and music and another for games and one just for saving downloads (sort of my storage closet). each of thoee partitions is at least 100 gigs, some more. i found years ago that i tend to fill partitions way too fast, so i tend to make them larger any more.

i also have a terrabyte usb drive just for backing up all the others. this is normally left off so as not to wear it out.

some folks put all data files on a separate partition, even saved games. some just cram it all on c:, though i find that a bit strange, unless you only have one small partition.

there isnt much advantage in seek time to make just small partitions, if any. and if you're doing anything like the way i'm doing, then you dont want to run out of space on that dedicated to whatever partition. so, however you're going to do it, leave yourself plenty of space for expansion and get a backup drive or system as soon as you can.
