If I use a filter by someone else, edit this filter in the filter editor, it saves it in a folder called "my filters"... When I use this edited version of the filter, does the original author get the usage stats for it? It seels fair to me that he would, but I've always wondered if that was the case? Lucie

I don't think it does.

lucie,
i dont know that anyone from FF, inc. has actually ever confirmed that or not. like KG, i've always assumed that the mod didnt credit back to the original in the stats collection, but that's an assumption, not necessarily fact. i do agree, though, it would be nice... up to a point. the trick would be deciding where that point is. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Well I hope they do! lol
I often use filter that I alter a bit to fit my purpose, but if it weren't for the original filter often I wouldn't be able to get just what I want, kinda disappointing if the author doesn't get the usage just because I altered his filter especially when the alterations aren't that extreme.
Maybe someone from FF could answer that one? Lucie

Lucie, if you edited the filter the author of the original filter won't get credited because technically it's very difficult to estimate how many changes were made to the original filter and how strongly do they impact the output.

If you need to edit the filter perhaps you could suggest a change to the original filter's author.

I could, but I kinda like editing them myself, it shows me a little bit how they're put together and helps me learn about the filter editor, I also like if I'm going to use the filter to just add my little touch and not use something that was entirely made by someone else. Lucie

----Why not just have it count toward the original creator's usage stats until/unless the person modding it changes the info part about who *made* it ? Since really, when I mod something, it's always gonna be half someone else's in a way, even if I modify it by over 1/2 cause it was still something they did that got me working in that direction ya know. Just an idea, and that way no one really "loses" regardless.

i'm not sure the info part would be where to do that, jffe, but i like the idea also. if you had something like that, the info or something else, that you normally wouldnt mod unless you really were going to submit it as your own, that would work great. the original author gets credit up to the point where you're now going to submit one as your own. i like that. i've got many filters i've modded, even after only using the original once or twice, and then used the mod quite a bit, but always felt a bit bad because the original author wasnt getting any more credit. you could even do it on the basis of putting in some sort of hidden parameter marking the filter as belonging to one author and only if the modded filter were submitted to the library would that hidden parameter then change to the new submitter's ownership. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
