This is a most beautiful thing! The screenshots are gorgeous. No more staring at the Windows GUI... FF looks so much happier now
![]() I was already planning to feature Filter Forge again in my next ezine (issue #13) as one of the hottest plug-ins currently available. Maybe the beta will be ready to play with in time. Great job all! Digital imaging blog & software discounts

Hey FF team, my congratulations to you all about the Mac version. I wish you guys a lot of Mac customers and 'zillions' of sells. I hope you guys keep growing and growing and growing with both versions and other new softwares/plug-ins in the future.
Are you guys going to create a new library in theFF site for the Mac version or the the same ffxml file fits for both versions? So, who creates in Mac version will share with PC and vice-versa. All the best, Lucato. |

Lucato, filters remain the same. In fact, almost everything remains the same — only it will work under Mac

Hey GMM, thanks for your reply.
That's pretty cool that it doesn't matter if the filter/texture was created in a PC or MAC. Both users will get to share them. Talking about Mac/PC, maybe you guys would add in the Filter info a new tab "Computer type" and you get to select MAC or PC. So, in the About tab you will see if it was generated in a MAC or PC user. Besides that, maybe in the forum Account page, we would also have the option to sec if we are MAC/PC user and it would under Posts: # / Filters #. Not so relevant, but just an idea. ![]() |

ah, the year of the pc/mac holywars. i remember it well. twas a long year, filled with inhuman cries, grief and longing for the mythical 'version 2'. the pc's blamed the macs and the macs blamed the pc's. both suffered and both nearly lost hope. the mighty Dilla was even seen with head bent and an ever obscure tear forming at the corner of one eye.

Great news! I look forward to working with the beta. Will there be an upgrade/sidegrade option for those of us who purchased the PC version because there was no Mac version? That would be really great.
Thanks. |

Yes, cross-platform upgrades will be available. There also will be an option to change platforms for free (you can give back your license for the Windows Pro edition and receive a license for the Mac Pro edition, etc).

that's pretty generous, but i would warn against doing that for free. i smell hassles and hackers and not good things! If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I wouldn't think there is any risk, Craig. It's a policy many companies have done; most recently Pixologic with their Mac release of ZB3. You can still basically run the program on your PC, but there is no support for it and dies with the next upgrade. That is if you only want to run on Mac as your primary. I do more and more cross-platform so am always interested in keeping programs that I can on both. Adobe, for instance, offers you no deals...you buy a whole new, expensive second seat if you want it on both platforms...sigh...now there's a company that knows they have you by the short hairs.
Thanks on cross-platform offers...I am grateful. |

We don't worry about 'hassles and hackers' at this point. We'll release it and see how it goes -- if need be, we'll simply clamp down the licensing policy.

Do you have an estimated time frame for the release of V2.....or is that on hold until things settle with the Mac version??? Steve

nor will there likely be any, steve. version 2 is most likely at least a year away, if not more. no software company in the world will make a prediction of release with something that far into the future.

I see the pre-orders for Macs and there are upgrades (though there is nothing to upgrade from). I have the pro version for the PC...I would like to get it for the Mac in addition, too, not in place of...but I am hoping I do not need to buy a whole new pro seat. Could I please get information on this?
Thanks, Cris |

@Chris: Yes, there will be discounts on the Mac version for existing PC users.
However, we've just launched a holiday discount program, under which you can preorder the Mac version at rock-bottom prices (http://www.filterforge.com/buy/). General discounts for PC users will be significantly lower -- I would recommend that you preorder now. |

No, there will be no new features in the upcoming Mac beta. This is an exact port of the current PC version, with Mac-specific UI stuff like open/save dialogs, icon sizes, installer, etc.
We have no V2 ETA yet. I do, however, have some ideas on how we're going to proceed with its development. We're all sick of 5-year-long projects, so most likely we will be developing V2.0 as a 'rolling beta', with gradual rollout of new features, which will be immediately available to all beta users. |

That reads wonderful! ![]() I'm guessing that this would require some infrastructural changes though, right? For example, we'd need a perpetual beta forum area and a perpetual beta filter library. What I love about the idea of a 'rolling beta' is that you can introduce new components and features in a slow and controlled fashion, and the beta community can test one feature at a time. Also, this keeps us long-term forum grinners happy, since we'd have regularly have something new to obsess about! Excellent! ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Forum is easy. As for the library, I'm inclined to allow submissions of filters made with 2.0 right from the start of the beta. However, the current implementation on the client side will try to send users to Upgrade page every time it sees a filter made with 2.0 or any higher major version -- we didn't take the possibility of beta submissions into account at the time we designed the library. We'll have to deal with this somehow. |
