Modo has released imageSynth 2 software for creating seamless tiles from photographic images. Here is a link to the information page.
imageSynth is noticeably faster than the original version and supports multi-core computers. In tests I ran yesterday, producing a 3600 x 3600 tile was reduced from a range of 30 to 45 minutes to less than 5 minutes. imageSynth 2 supports Mac and Windows platforms and runs as a plug in for Photoshop CS3 or higher or as a stand alone application. the Candy Wrapper Example on the homepage is pretty cool, it creates white and yellow taffy pieces that are not even preset in the original image!
