I bought a copy of the Basic FF and was rendering an image of Presidio's Lace and wanted to save it as a .PNG file, however, I got a popup that said:
"You cannot save to high-precision image formats in Basic or Standard editions. Please upgrade to Professional." Why is that?? Thanks for any and all information given. |

I think that's just the way FF set it up to sell less expensive versions.....or get you to buy the professional version.....

I'm curious to know what FF charges to upgrade a restricted version to the full professional version.....if you have to pay the full price on top of what you already paid for the restricted version???

Wait a minute...when I downloaded the trial of FF, it said on the page:
"Fully-functional, no limitations except the time limit". Now that I payed for it, there IS a limitation?? Sorry, maybe I'm not understanding this very well. ![]() |

You get to use the demo restriction-free for 30 days.....and FF has been granting two extra 30 day time extensions for those who are actively contributing filters.....for a total of 90 days of unrestricted use.....
I think it's a pretty good promo scheme to get filters for the library......while giving people a good chance of getting a free copy...... Steve

Trial has a time limit, but is free to use and has no feature limitations so you can decide what functions you use and buy the appropriately featured edition by matching.
If I recall correctly (I'm at home now, so can't confirm) you can save to PNG format using Basic edition, but you should use 8 bit formats only (the same goes for TIFF format). EXR and PFM formats are not supported at all in non-pro versions. Also, upgrade options are available at almost no additional cost (upgrade cost is equal to the difference between version you're upgrading to and your currently owned one), check here. |

When FF was originally introduced, there was only one edition -- Professional, offered at the same price it has now. Of course, we recognized that the price tag might look to steep for users that can live without those extras, so we went along and introduced limited versions that still should do most of the jobs (not many people do 16/32-bit image processing or work with 10000x10000 images on everyday basis for example), at a (greatly) reduced cost.

I can't afford the $200.00 upgrade to Professional right now. Maybe in a year or so. Meanwhile..... |

Well, if you don't need 16-bit PNGs you should be able to save to 8-bit ones. They will do just fine for most of the cases.

I can save in 8 bit, but I don't know if the 16 bit ones are a better quality? Seems like it would be? Meanwhile, I'll have to make do with what I have now. I'm a retired old woman who is on SS...so it's going to be a loooong while until I can afford the $200.00 upgrade. lol |

I could render out a 16 bit png and you could compare.

Click on the filter you like from the library, then click the big "open in filterforge" button on the right side of the web page. Then you will have it in your version of FF on your machine. |

omega3, for the most part you wont need 16 bit. it is slightly better, but you really wont see the quality increase until you start working with VERY large images and file sizes.

Now, there is a difference in saving a graphic with an alpha channel (being 32 bits/pixel - 8 red, 8 green, 8 blue, and 8 alpha) rather than having a 16 bit/channel image (16 red, 16 blue, 16 green), which is where the limitation in FF is, I believe. Not only is that true, but if you're going to switch that to JPG essentially ever, it's worthless to work in 16 bit. Even Photoshop CS3 has limited support for 16 bit/channel operations, and you can't save a JPG out at 16 bit (yet, anyway). I can say that I've worked in 16 bit/channel about... oh, twice in the last couple of years for my day to day stuff. |

It should. There's some weirdness with 16 bit jpgs in general, but 2000 was supposed to fix that. The bigger weirdness is that JPG2000 is still a shaky format, and unsupported in a lot of software. Even Photoshop CS3 won't support it without a plugin (optional install on the disk.) Also, a jpg ghost story: In Photoshop CS2 (and CS3, presumably) you can't save a 16 bit JPG, BUT you can save a 8 bit jpg, upsample it to 16 bit, and then save it... and you'll never be able to open it again. Ooooooo! |
