so, vladimiar, when is the next version coming out? we keep hearing that 'this is fixed' and 'that is fixed' and 'that's going to be added in the next version' and so on, but WHEN do we get to see it and play with it?
and, whereas i know that can sometimes be a pretty hard thing to estimate, could you maybe tell us also WHAT is going to be changed and what isnt for the next version?
god, i feel like a kid waiting for christmas morning

If everything goes well I predict the end of this week or beginning of the next one as a possible release date. The worst bug isn't still caught, but the most frequent ones are Also there are some performance improvements and even freshly added functionality

Since we released the beta, my working week has been 7 days, no holidays, 15-16 hours a day

Well, I'm afraid it didn't -- the opening of the submission queue to the public has revealed several problems that need our attention. I'm currently deciding whether to deal with them in the upcoming first update or move them to the second update.

well, if it's any consolation, i've found that to be the case with the other companies i've tested for as they near a release date. most just add another day in the week to compensate

ok, i've been patient, i've kept my mouth closed, i've waited silently and not harrassed the devs but it's been beyond 'end of the week' and 'next week' by quite a bit now and i want my new toys! so, what's going on, guys? what's the word? when do we get to come downstairs and open the new presents?
off hand, i'd say it's time. traffic on the site has slowed way down. though, i do see more filters coming in every day. and i see we've also got a new gallery forum... nice so, what's the word?

hehehe, you've definitely got this 'tell them nothing definite, make no promises you cant keep' thing down, vlad i suppose it's the right way to do it, but ever so frustrating on our end ok, i'll be good.
i am a bit curious about one other aspect of the way the FF team is doing things. you mentioned a while back that there were something like 1200 beta testers already (that may be wrong, but it's what i remember). and i'm sure there are more signed up since then. you've also, i presume been keeping the demo up for download all this time. so, how are you going to close things back up when FF is ready for final release?
i mean, i've got a version here that is registered and working ok, albeit with a few bugs, but working fairly well. theoretically, i could simply not ever get another update and this thing would continue to work regardless of whatever is done later on to close things back up. so, i'm curious; how are you going to keep from 'giving away the farm' here?
and along those same lines, as a beta tester i've always received a free version of the final product for testing and reporting and making contributions to the software and development thereof. but, that's 'closed beta' and this seems to be more of an 'open beta', which i know is different and generally more broad. and i also know that the idea here was to submit filters, which, if they got approved, would help to qualify us for the full final version at a discount or even for free. and at this point, even if this is not correct in your guy's view, i sort of feel i've qualified, even if my submissions didnt get used.
and that brings me to the last point here. with 1200+ testers out there, where are they? i'm on these forums every day, even if not logged in i do come and check the new messages and i work with FF every day as well. i see a group of regulars here, which is quite small, byRo, uberzev, mike, ken, whitedove, myself, quasimondo, CFandM, lucato and surely a couple others i'm forgetting, and i would think all of these qualified for a free final version. but that's just my 'think' on the matter and isnt necessarily what you guys are looking at. so, the question is, what are you looking at here with respect to the regulars here? byRo, quasi, and uber probably get in just by their contributions of their fine filters and innovative snippets, but i'm not so sure about myself. so, i'm curious how this works here and naturally enough, if i've qualified or not and if some of the others have or not.
so, any light that can be shed on this i'd appreciate.

The current number is 2610, and it keeps growing every day.

The beta keys are temporary, they will expire by October 2006, and the beta will stop working. Also, when we release the final version, the beta keys won't work in it. If you're still running the beta by that time, you won't be able to submit or download filters because this will require the latest version of FF (it will ask you to update when you try to submit or download).

A correction: "with 2610 testers out there". The majority of them simply doesn't post here in the forums. For example, we have a good number of high-profile testers from well-known game development companies such as ID Software, Epic Games, EA, Nintendo, Sony, Emergent and more. I just don't think that they have a lot of free time to post here. They do show up in my email, they ask direct questions, but they don't post, and I believe that's perfectly normal.

Any registered beta tester who reported a bug, helped us reproduce a bug, helped us fix a bug, suggested a feature that made it into the product, or suggested a feature that was included into our development plan, will get a free copy. These conditions aren't rigid, and can be expanded to include other situations and kinds of feedback.

Vladimir,
Will we be able to keep our own creations and favorites from the submission category when the final version comes in October 2006 or do we will need to copy the creations and transfer to tne final version?

Yes, you will be able to keep them. The final version will be able to read old filter formats, and when you upgrade Filter Forge beta to the final version, it won't delete anything from the filter storage.

I don't know if I'll ever get a free copy. Of course this would be appreciated.
I honestly feel this is the most interesting and usefull tool I've used in a long time. I'm really just doing my part, hopefully to add value or perhaps add interest by contributing. I feel in a way obligated to assist in any way I can.
After my dealings with MaxwellRender... Working with this beta and your company is a HUGE breath of fresh air. I am enjoying myself immensely and regardless if I ever qualify for a free copy I WILL be purchasing it.
(though free is better)
keep it up you guys, and try to get some sleep every once in a while.

If I or any of our 'official' posters ever said "I'm adding this to our development plan" in response to any of your feature suggestions, you can count on the free copy

Oh yes, I heard how they handle their betas and user feedback. Nevertheless, I still think that Maxwell (and the whole idea of physically correct light transport) is currently the biggest thing in rendering. The guys aren't very diplomatic, but the stuff they're doing is amazing.

ok... how about a "complete filter" button. My bosses have always seemed to think there was a 'finish design' button on my keyboard somewhere...
so it must be a good idea... right?
As for Maxwell... looks like FF might be the perfect companion. And, yes, it's amazing AND groundbreaking... if only it would get finished. (no... it's not really finished.. even though it's V1) I can't wait... it's quite cool... especially for photographers/cg artists like myself. The best of BOTH worlds in one!
