When you have a bazillian photo resource textures which you can use on a texturing progect that would take 5 min to make tileable, but instead you spend 4 hours trying to do the same look with filterforge.

It definitely is. Not only are we committing mass economic suicide by 'deficit' spending our time, altruistically building filters for others to profit from, but simultaneously we're marvelously rewarded by partaking in a community permeated with a grand spirit of shared creation. It's a true dilemma.

We're experiencing the birth of a new breed of highly addictive online games, the genesis of the MMOFF (Massively Multiplayer Online Filter Forging). It's so highly addictive because you can get the game client for free and don't have to pay subscription fees if you're willing to help build the game world...

WOW!

Yeah, that would be immensely cool. I have the feeling though that the current brand of MMOs sees to it we're turned into mindless grind-bots instead of unleashing our creativity for creating content... it's rather obvious these games are designed to train the young to become perfectly docile gears in the robot-state of the future!

I think second life is geared towards creativity rather than obsessive compulsive behavior. Too bad they charge per ounce of creativity, and all the players are just trying to make money. That would be an amazing game if it didn't feel like a swapmeet in the matrix. I like the filter forge model, tons of game companies want people to make mods for their games since it makes the games more useful and popular, but they don't have any rewards or incentives for the mod community.

I think that's why this is such a nice place.....everyone here is not trying to make a buck.....more like a community where people can be as creative as they like without fearing the 'Hitler Youth' types.....like it is in the Adobe Forums and other places..... smile;) smile:)

Actually we're all trying to be creative, and figure we might as well get paid for it while we're there. smile:D Getting paid for being creative IS one very good reason to keep being creative after all. Otherwise I suspect not nearly so many filters would get submitted to FF smile:)

Also, don't knock Second Life, needing textures for my creations there got me here smile:)

i'm not that familiar with second life. my only contact is through Torley (i think that's who it was here). how does second life 'charge per ounce of creativity'?

I think Quender was referring to the fact that all Second Life content is made by the players of Second Life, not by Linden labs who are the company behind SL. And since you make it, you can sell the fruits of your labor to others. So when you look around there, it can at times seem that shops are everything that is around,... but they're not by a long shot, and there ARE even free things being offered smile:) Or things that I simply marvel at the beauty of, and the creativity behind them smile:D Like the waterfall at Image Reflections, the gardens at Bliss Basin, or the Volcano Caldera at Temenos Island to name just a few spots. All of which can be enjoyed for free smile8)

well, i looked briefly at the main page on SL again. they're selling their creations for SL on e-bay? lol. too funny. i've actually done this sort of thing before with game pieces/items. always strikes me funny, though.

it sounds like an interesting universe. is there a point to SL other than just creating and displaying your 3d art talents? it sounds somewhat like Sims Online, only less structured and more creative.

Well, buying things from e-bay isn't usually what I do, but I suppose its a valid thing. This isn't the 'buy a rare artifact' kinda selling though thats more usual on the fighting fantasy type of MMORPG's . You can likely buy anything you get on ebay just as easily in game. Just, since Linden Dollars (the game currency) can be converted into 'real' currency and back easily, some of the commerce was bound to spill out on the web. There are even Websites specializing in selling SL stuff smile:D

Thats like asking 'What is the point to life?'. And just like that question, no real answer can be given, you get to decide what you want to get out of being on SL. For some its making things as you said. For some its the social components of meeting and interacting with players. For some its the thrill of shooting each other on the Combat Sims, and hey, whatever tunes your motor smile8)

Me, I go for the social aspects, and I like making pretty shiny things smile:-) Also, as you may have noticed, I'm a furry, so I enjoy being able to run around as a cat on SL. And yes thats an inworld picture of me I'm using as my avatar.

So, if you want, try making a character, the first account is for free, and take a look if anything that goes on on SL could be to your liking smile:)

ok, sounds kind of cool. what do you mean by the first account is free? ok, i know what it means, but are there limitations to a 'first account' or restrictions of some kind? and, what would be the advantages of having a second account, since i assume that some must be doing that?

This thread has wandered rather far off topic and has nothing to do anymore with Filter Forge, so I've started a thread in the Off-Topic Forum and answered you there smile:-)
