I was wondering if anyone else started using the projects feature yet......Here is a project ideal that gives you an image without any effects and then shows you the steps/filters that I used to get the final result......For each filter applied I saved that result and re-imported that image to the artboard.....I also deleted the presets not used in that filter since they did not apply to the result.......
Below you can find the link to the project file..... Church Project This is an image taken by myself so feel free to use the image...... You can even add your own image by right clicking on the artboard and choose properties and import image... Then save that result and import that result to the next step in the sequence......You do need the studio version or (I think) the trial...... I did start playing with projects. It does solve one problem that has bugged me for a long time. If you've spent some time working out the perfect settings for applying a filter to a specific image there was no easy way to save those settings and then modify them later. I used to take a screenshot of the settings in case I needed to go back and tweak anything. I could I suppose have edited the filter and created a new preset but that's also pretty clumsy.
The other thing which I still want and which I hope will be a future enhancement is the ability to chain filters together and adjust the settings. In your church example I'd like to be able to turn on all three filters at once and have them applied in order. I'd like to then be able to change the settings for any of the filters and have Filter Forge reapply all three filters to my source image. I realize that the rendering could get pretty slow but it would be such a useful feature. I can't believe that I am alone in wanting this. |

The project idea looks good - but I have a question.
Normally I use AFPhoto and AFDesign and use FF occasionally as a plugin. If I use the Project approach ( faster to trial the effects of different filters and store them to try again), what is the way to get a good preset back into the filter in the normal library so I can use it then as a plugin in AFPhoto. I'm probably just confused. Writing down lots of numbers is not the most productive use of my time ![]() |

When you load a filter into a project, a copy of the filter is created in the project's virtual folder. I recommend to rename filters inside a project so that you can easily tell them from the original filters in the main (non-project) filter storage. After you make modifications to the project filter, you can copy it back to the main storage — the same way as you would copy a filter between different folders. (not sure if this is clear enough - feel free to ask any clarifying questions) |

My version of FF 10 is the pro version, not the suite, so I can't save projects. Which is fine, but I found that I could not work in the filter editor with a project open without being able to save my work on the filter itself. I usually do this to refine things at a higher resolution, which means having a bigger image to work with. I thought I tried saving the project filter and bringing it back into my side storage (work in progress folder), but I was still losing the changes. Did I miss a step somewhere?

@GMM thanks - that makes sense.
It might be awkward when multiple usage is involved but fortunately I have written a Python script that merges presets from multiple versions of a filter. @DR I think it will work for you in Pro (as I have been doing) -- when editing, do a save-filter-as <newname> [ typically called xxx-devA, xxx-devB ! ] Also if editing a filter and changing parameters, I have a duplicate of the first preset in the list of presets which is the one affected by changes to parameters - then after changes, I can drag the copy back to first position if required (eg if releasing to the public) |

This is intended bahavior - without the Studio Edition you can't save anything into a project. |

I don't really need to save projects with what I do. I would like it if my work in the filter editor would save, however. I've been doing everything in FF 9 these days, for that reason. I'll give saving out a new filter, as westdale suggests, and replace the original when changes are worth committing. |

Well, I can not test it and use it because my FF Lifetime membership is for the Profesional version, and I did only get the FF 10 Professional key and not the Studio key, so I can not use it Also I am really not much interested in it to upgrade, because I am sorry that I do not understand. grasp or perceive the idea behind the new FF Projects, and can not know what is useful and good for and in what way it could help me. It seems that you know how it works, so could you explain it ? Thanks very much |

Hi SR
A project stores images, links to filters, presets on filters specifically for this project -- and the processing results as artboards. It means they are all together in one place for development of images for use elsewhere. I decided to buy it as there was an upgrade offer. What I find is that it is a bit faster to develop new presets here than in Affinity - though I do not do any very complex processing ( I don't develop games for instance) |

Thanks. Yes I have read the Projects and artboards description available in the features page and I already know that it stores all these things you have told, but I am sorry that I do not see the point and purpose of doing this, and why I want to do it, what benefit would I get from having all the settings in an project or artboards? The only thing that I see it good for for me is if I would want to share a project with someone else that also has FF 10 Studio. I know that FF Presets store all the settings of a filter so you do not have to enter and remember them each time and share them inside the filters, but why would I need and want to store the filters, presets and all that can be saved in the new FF Projects. I want to know as I may be missing something and it could be interesting and useful Thanks and sorry if I do not get it yet |

Yes, this is the main benefit. This "someone else" can be yourself as well – like when you do your artwork interchangeably on two computers and need to transfer it back and forth between the machines. |

Thanks GMM and is true that can be also for myself, but I am sorry that I would like to buy the upgrade to Studio but I do not know how would I use it and for what, and this is why I asked, as I may be missing something interesting and useful, but regrettably I do not know how this can be used and the purpose of it.

As a retired person I happen to work on two computers as I move around - desktop and laptop. It is unfortunate (and very 1980s) that the software takes a hard line on single person use in the way it does. With hindsight probably, and certainly without the offer, I would not have upgraded. There is as I say a minor benefit when trialling variations of presets and in managing chains of filtration (which I have not yet tried). |

Playing around with the new animation and taken some old filters and animating those.....Here is a test animation with text......TEXT TEST
I also included the project file here.....You will get an error when you first open this project just dismiss the error and sel ect the first filter in the project file on the left.....The error points to a folder on my computer that I have not included since its too big....... You text needs to be on a transparent background and the text color a dark color or black. Import the text image into the project and select that imported file fr om the first filters settings tab....... COLORFUL SCRIBBLE TEXT Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

Now really there is a very good reason about using and upgrade to the studio version for those that can be able to pay for it as the animation is really a very powerful, useful and very interesting thing
Cool and well done example showing how it works and for sharing the filter although I can not use it as I have only FF 11 professional |

A couple of remarks on Projects:
Personally, I never used FF in a non-project mode since the moment projects became available. I like being able to save my work and get back to it later. As for the future, the value of the concept of projects will only grow. The reason is simple -- projects provide a way for Filter Forge to store stuff that doesn't belong inside a filter. Keyframes (planned for future releases) will be stored in the project data for each artboard. Filter stack (also planned for future releases) will also be stored in the project data for each artboard. |

I have only played around with projects but the use and power of a project with animation is obvious. The procedural animation is great but I can’t wait for key frames. Thanks Vlad, it’s going in a very good direction.

Now I understand why the projects have been created, and it was because you needed a way to store data that can not be included in a filter so of course you need the tools to handle this outside of the filter editor
Good to know that keyframe animation and filter stack will be added for FF 12 in December 2022, thanks very much for the good news |

It's not guaranteed that they make it to FF12. Keyframe animation and the filter stack are pretty big tasks. |
