I own FF 8.0 now about 6 months and I like most of it very much. I am wondering if it might advantageous to get the lifetime upgrades in stead of just FF 9.0 upgrade.

My question is : how often does FF offer an upgrade (roughly). Or how old if FF?

Thanks, Beat

There's roughly a year between major updates. Version 1.0 was released in 2007. You can check the release history here:

Thanks emme. I just took the lifetime upgrade subscription.

I think that FF is an incredible program, gives me so much possibilities to actualize my ideas and to experiment to my hearts content.
Unfortunately, I think that many things could be improved upon, e.g. the user interface. In this I mean the settings section that the end user has to struggle with. That is really primitive. There is no way to separate the controls of a specific component or section from the others. A programmable division line and color assignment would move it a bit in the right direction.
Also it would be nice to be able to input names that are a bit longer than now possible. With a switch with 5 choices, it is impossible to label these choices.

I hope in future upgrades something will improve in this area.
I must also say, that I was totally surprised there was no decent way to make notes in the programming environment. Every programmer knows the importance of notes. Fortunately this has been solved in version 9.
So in the end I am really surprised at the power and possibilities of FF and at the same time amazed at the holes.

To be clear, I am not putting down FF (I am recommending + showing FF to everyone I think could possibly do something with it), I only hope it can become the unbelievable program of which it carries the potentialities.

I think that if you want that someone fr om FF team would read your previous post message, I think that it would be really much better to put it in the FEATURE WISHLIST , wh ere they could find this, because here will be lost and not be seen

In my experience... about 2 months after you've paid for the current version without any warning that the version you are about to download is also about to become obsolete. And then almost all newly created filters will only work for the absolute newest version. I guess there is a reason torrenting is so popular.

SturgeonGeneral, could you explain a bit more. I don't quite get what you mean.

Thanks, TheBeat

If I have seen correctly in the last 5 years since FF 5. It has been updated and released a new version oonce a year sometime in November, as you can see for yourself in the news of the released software that it is made in November all the news about the date it was released a new version of FF

Then you buy it on september because since FF 5.0 it seems that is has been released the final version in November of that year

So long story short... FF is an annual subscription service more than anything, unless one wants to pour way more money into a filter program than they did their actual graphics program? After 10,000+ posts, I'm guessing you know this software inside and out, but it still would have been nice to know upfront. A new customer shouldn't have to hunt through entire forums to find out their software is about to become old news and unusable with newly created filters as soon as they pay for it. It's awesome software, don't get me wrong. And the talent I've seen in the creation of some of the filters is extremely talented. I'm just a bit bitter that as soon as I paid for FF7, they released FF8 less than two months later. I say fine and and pay for the upgrade. Now I can't use any of the new filters because I haven't coughed up the annual subscription fee. Admittedly I'm bitter that 95% of new filters are unusable, but I guess I should have read up on everything about the product before renting.

If I understand SturgeonGeneral correct :

The filters s/he is talking about are the filters made by others and put into the library for download, NOT the filters s/he made him/her-self.
Although I can understand it is frustrating that after one month of using a FF version, the next one comes around and the filters created in the new version do not work in the old one. It would have been kind to get a reduction on the upgrade.

But I can understand that a new version of FF is not compatible with an older version. E.g. how would the programmer accomodate for a new idea in the newer version of FF, so that Filters making use of that new idea would also run on the older version, t.i. without the code for the new idea. Same goes for new components.

I think FF is such an excellent program, that I bought the lifetime upgrades, for a reasonable price ($180,- I believe). Now I will never face the problem SturgeonGeneral has.

Apparently my complaint was legit enough that the site now actually refers to this program as a subscription service.

You are welcome!!

FF is not at all an annual subscription if you do not want, as there is the option to subscribe or not, as you can buy it.

If you consider that it could be like a simulated subscription in the way that you may have to upgrade each year to be able to keep using the latest filters, then it is like most other similar software, but in difference you are not forced at all to upgrade, you can keep using it forever without upgrading and only able to download all the filters until the version you already have, and do not have to pay anything else.

OPTIONS AVAILABLE UNTIL NOW FOR USING FF

OPTION 1 - Buy the software and do not upgrade, you can use it without paying and download any filter until the version you have, and do not have to pay again.

OPTION 2 - Buy the software and upgrade to each version

OPTION 3 - Buy the software and upgrade when you want and consider justified to do it

OPTION 4 - Buy the Lifetime option and dot bother anymore with any upgrade and will not have to pay again

OPTION 5 - Buy a 3 month subscription and renew it when you want and have all the latest upgrades while you are paying the subscription.

OPTION 6 - Make filters that get a High Usage reward and then you can get FF for free, and if you can get 5 rewards you can get the Lifetime version for free.

As far as I have seen the site does not refer to this program as a subscription, it only offers a discount sometimes for the subscription version. See the 6 options above
