This is the first thing I tried when I opened the filter editor.

I threw in checker and tried to modulate the H Repeat with another map. I assumed that a white to black gradient would give me increasing checker widths along the x axis.

Such a shame you can't do things like this. Other ideas I wanted to try out were having the luminance of an image feed into the radius of a gaussian blur etc.

Yes, a blur with a mapped radius is lucrative idea -- we even have a prototype. The only problem is that such "mapped blurs" can't use optimizations which make regular blurs to calculate quickly. And the rendering time of such a blur will increase exponentially with larger radiuses (radii? radia? smile:) )

We dropped that a long time ago. Technically, that was possible, but it was absolutely impractical -- just a gimmick with no real use.

You put a few 'gimmicks with no real use' out there and see what people come up with. The most interesting applications for versatile tools are often things unimagined by their makers!

I notice Mario from Quasimondo is already contributing to this project. Hi Mario, I remember you from the good old Filter Factory mailing list... What's your take on this?

Hi Andy! Indeed, I completely agree with you here - I think the more options for playful experimentation there are the better. Especially if something is technically no problem I see no reason why it should be left out. There will always be someone who finds it useful. As I see it Filter Forge is perfectly suited to create a lot of happy accidents.
