Hi, you may already know about these threads
Pattern Filling by ThreeDee and the original source of this thread How would you make this variable dots pattern in FF? Well all the examples shown on those threads are all with PLAIN colors filled shapes what I thought is that they could be circular or rectangular shapes BUT with filled images I mean like this example shown here below ![]() |

Of course that is not at all needed to make it so much tight and perfect fitted circles as shown above
it can be as ThreeDee have already shown as seen here ![]() As you can see this example is with white color, but it would be good if there could be possible to load a source image that is round with alpha channel and that would be resized to the same size of the circles, for example a circular flower like a sunflower THREEDEE CIRCLE PACKING FILTER ThreeDee have already given an example filter called CIRCLE PACKING 6B (Available here in this direct link) giving ability to use plain colors circles shapes, but there is no way to use images inside the circles as they are created inside the map script without any image input The problem for me is that all the filter is made with a map script so I can not add or modify anything of this filter MORE EXAMPLES SHOWN HERE I have already put an example at the end of this other thread 4 years ago Please, How to control the SPACING between particles in Bomber FF 3.0? ![]() ![]() ![]() This examples above all use the exactly same source image, but it can be also used multiple images with only one source input if it is used the awesome and amazing Grid Image Input by Rick Duim So considering these 3 examples, and considering that ThreeDee have already shown that is possible to have this image shown here ![]() Then I think it would not be too difficult to replace the white color with a circular source image with alpha channel and resize it to fit inside of the created circles SQUARES INSTEAD OF CIRCLES? I wonder if it would be possible to be also alternatively possible to put squares instead of circles, and fill the squares with images too for example this image below that uses a square packing but with still with multiple solid plain colors, Imagine that this squares could be filled with different images ![]() |

There's been a lot of interesting development in regards to these kinds of things. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like FF will make a move on it any time soon and many of the prominent members involved in this kinda broke off to their own universe floating in and out of these forums.
I have a couple thoughts personally: I would totally not mind paying for this kind of thing. This thing has been on high-demand but low development, I think it's just tough making these kinds of interesting features and more than anything, I feel that people should be compensated for the time spent on a project like this. Just saying though. If you're a really really kind soul, please, those were just personal thoughts and while I should keep them to myself, I mean that with respect for those who've really contributed their time making stuff happen on these forums. All of that being said here are some new things that popped up while the forums slept on the topic. I recently purchased this AfterEffects plugin/script: http://aescripts.com/pastiche/ It basically does what you're always begging for. And does it even more conveniently, gives you animation abilities as well. What's intense about this is that it does a fantastic job with huge number of layers. You can manually tweak and move each and every piece if you want to after the initial distribution is generated. This basically makes my job so much easier. There's ALWAYS been a script for Illustrator that totally does circle packing: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/732621 It works great. It does a fine job filling up those circles and you can get pretty clever with it too. I made a little example using that script. Basically filled the text with circles, then exported an svg file out into Modo, then extruded, shaded, and rendered. Very simple stuff but extremely effective. I think this is one solution for you. Also note that once you have the circle packed shape, you can probably use each circle as a reference for replacing with other shapes. It won't be as accurately filled, but it might as well work since Illustrator can be pretty flexible. ![]() |

Additionally, I've kinda discussed this in a earlier thread but you can always use physics to simulate objects colliding with one another, in turn, creating a "packing" effect. There are tons of tutorials on this subject. For example if you have Cinema4D you can try this: http://greyscalegorilla.com/tutorials...cinema-4d/
And of course, since many 3D packages already have physics capabilities (in varying degrees), you can always translate that method to other programs. In my case I used Modo to simulate a bunch of spheres thrown onto a surface, which by letting the simulation settle, creates a nice pack of objects. It's not too difficult to fill other shapes with this method of course, so consider what I'm writing here just a rough idea. The point being that: it's doable in most major 3D program packages. You can replace the spheres with any shape you want too! In the end, if you have no access, there's always Blender. It might be the toughest, but it's surely the strongest contender amongst the major programs. I know that these were suggestions beyond the scope of FilterForge, but I just thought that we might as well discuss some alternatives since a lot of ideas have stalled and so far it's kinda tough asking people to fill in on a topic like this. Hopefully answers will emerge over time. In the end though, I think you can take up the adventure from other angles and perspectives. They can be technical, but I feel like that's kinda like the fun part about it. [Edit] Cut out some bits of it. ![]() |

I already posted it before in this thread ( Is someone here capable of making a filter that can do this ), but there is a Photoshop filter able to do box filled images : Box Fitting.
![]() I still have to try it, but it doesn't look bad. |

Thanks very much for all the well done, useful, interesting and useful comments Skybase, and love much the links you have put
Will comment later more about your great answer I already know very well Cinema 4D and love GrayscaleGorilla, although I can´t afford to buy CInema 4D ![]()
Yes, I have seen this, and is very good, but is the opposite of what I have explained above, I do not want a source image made with spheres or squares, because this is already done and already available from the ThreeDee thread and this is why I decided to make a new thread to make it different I think that I have explained it wrong and made the thread too complex to be understood correctly, as it is much simpler |

Remember, I mentioned that you can do this in any other 3D package pretty easily. Blender is a fantastic free alternative with thousands of tutorials that can basically do the things you've been asking for you. There are other cheap alternatives to 3D software as well and I just think you shouldn't get caught up with C4D. I just find it that this topic keeps popping up anyway regardless of what the thread contents may be. It's like now a slow moving topic that may or may not get any new info but it's interesting anyway. I don't think you're wrong asking for something pretty complex. I just think that you kinda squeezed so much out of the topic that nothing new's happening at least on the FilterForge end. So I thought I'd just dump some cool new things that's now on the market. |
