I want to do a B/W sketched portrait of my brother who passed away recently from a long illness, as a gift to his widow. I have a photo from a few years back when he was healthy, what is the best (and easiest) filter to use for that in Photoshop?

I am new to Filter Forge (and awed by the possibilities!) and have only used PS to do basic framing and adjustments of photos - nothing complicated.

I'm looking for a basic conversion that gives a simple pencil type sketch, perhaps with some shading - but no "special effects".

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I am very sorry to hear about your brother. My condolences to your family.

A present of a sketch is a wonderful idea.

In my experience, there is no one great recipe for every image, since filters that look good on one image aren't suitable for another. If you plan to create your sketched version with FilterForge, there are numerous sketch filters to choose from. I would search the library for "Pencil Sketch", download the most likely ones and try them out on your photo. Since you are using Photoshop, you can easily apply different filters to your original photo on different layers and then experiment with combining the layers with different blending modes and opacity levels. I did a sketch a while back using Pencil Sketch by Ro on the bottom layer and Simple Sketch by Photoman on top in Multiply mode to emphasize the edges that gave me a satisfactory result on the image I was using.

I haven't come across a Filter Forge pencil sketch that really looks hand-drawn, because the strokes on the ones I have tried are very regular. There are affordable consumer software programs that specialize in turning images into more realistic looking sketches and paintings by using random and uneven strokes (e.g. Dynamic Auto Painter, Alien Skin Snap Art,Topaz Impression, etc.), but I'm sure you'll find a solution in FilterForge with some experimentation.

Thanks for your words - knowing it was coming does not make it easier.

And also for the suggestions. I pretty much expected that I would need to experiment, but needed some idea on the direction - I had not realized that you can combine filters... I'll have to play with that!

Again, thanks.
