since FF is a 'construction kit' i got to thinking, why not add more options. there is a big lack of patterns to choose from right now in the editor area. why not allow the users to import their own pattern files and use those?
ok, i admit it, i tried this. i checked the files and found 'brick.bmp' and loaded it up in psp to check the specs. it was a simple 48 x 48 bmp file. so, i made another 48 x 48 bmp file and loaded it into 'resources\components'. hehe. it didnt work. so, there must be some code attached to these bmp's. still, it would be nice if one could import image files for textures and patterns as templates for making filters. craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Take a look at this......
http://www.shaders.co.uk/ifw2_nodal/n.../index.htm lots of nice fractal pattern types... about 200 total i think... alot but can be looked at for future input for adding more pattern types for this software...... A image import feature would be very helpfull as well, i do like that idea...... |

This will prevent the filter from looking good at high resolutions. For example, a user import s a 48x48 BMP file and uses it within the filter. So far the filter looks nice when rendered into small resolutions like 600x600 pixels. Just imagine how it would look when rendered into 32000x32000 pixels. |

Absolutely agree. Frankly, we've added the patterns just to make the component set look more balanced. We sorted through available options and picked three patterns most used in everyday life. Plus, Tiles is a very versatile pattern and can be applied well beyond its traditional bathroom uses -- grids, checkerboards, pixelations etc etc. We'll definitely add more patterns in future releases. |

Yeah... that's true about the imports sense they are not procedurally based all one would get is a pixelated blur at higher resolutions... the only reason i though it might work is that in Genetica 2.5 there is a import image node and sometimes i tend to use that when there is not the right fractal noises available but as long as there is a mass variety of patterns to choose from and enough ways to manipulate those patterns i am sure alot can be created with just that alone......

thanks, vladimir.
just one note on this: This will prevent the filter from looking good at high resolutions. For example, a user import s a 48x48 BMP file and uses it within the filter. So far the filter looks nice when rendered into small resolutions like 600x600 pixels. Just imagine how it would look when rendered into 32000x32000 pixels.[QUOTE] there's no reason one couldnt import a 48x48, a 96x96, a 1024x1024 or larger, all of the same image pattern. i've seen similar things where one chooses 'low resolution', 'medium resolution', 'high resolution' and so on. so, one could have a component choice of 'patterns', with sub-menu items of 'low resolution', 'medium' and 'high'. or however one wanted to do it. i just thought that since you're allowing users to contribute to the package, why not open it up even more and let them contribute to even more of the package. craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Maybe you'd allow us to furnish you with patterns...?

Oh, and BTW, a lack of patterns, IMHO, is a weakness of fairly large proportions... but that's just me...

i agree with Paul, the program needs the option to have loads of patterns and also the option to import as many images/masks as you like. Have you seen Genetica, thats a good example of how well a program with lots of patterns works, and in my opinion its one of the best programs around

Thanks for the links, im really bad at maths though so i can't really put that info to good use, there is plans to be able to import images at some point though right? Its probably what i think the programs missing most right now.
