I have windows 7 and am using Google Chrome and when I click on "Filter Forge: Download more Filters it works just fine and opens the Filter Forge filter page. But when I find a filter I want and click on Download Filter nothing happens. I know the problem is in the browser setting but I don't know how to make it work. I was hoping that someone else understands this better than myself could help walk me through the process on getting this to work in my browser. I do have the newest Filter Forge on my computer.
I might also mention before I upgraded Filter Forge I was using Internet Explorer and it does work using this server because this was the initial browser used in the set up process. Thanks |

You can try removing the filterforge:// protocol handler from your Google Chrome: go to Settings > Advanced > Content Settings > Manage handlers. Then reinstall FF: hopefully it will fix your handler.
Or you can simply download filters with another browser ![]() |

Thanks for the idea. I did follow these steps you mention from reading on some other forums. The problem I found that others were having is when I get to he Manage handlers there is nothing there. There is no pull down menu no way to choose another handler. In short it is just an open box that won't let me do any action whatsoever. If I could figure out how to get this to work I could us Google Chrome as I like it better than my other browsers.
But do to the fact I am working on a project and need a couple of filters for it I might have to use the other browser. I spent more time than I would like to talk about trying to figure out why the Manage handler on my computer does not follow the simple steps given on Google Chromes site. They say there should be a pull down menu ha I certainly don't have one. Thanks again. Allen |

Sorry for semi-hijacking this thread, but I need also a solution for "not possible to download":
Just some moments ago I wanted to download a filter (2.0) and I get the message "To open library filters, you must have a newer version of Filter Forge. Update now?". I use FF 4.0. Why do I need an update for an 2.0 filter? How can this be disabled so I can download filters? |

This cannot be disabled: you always need to have the latest update to be able to download filters. Just click Ok in this dialog box, and the latest version will be downloaded automatically. |

Well, forcing updates is not really friendly or useful ... And it doesn't make any sense to have "the latest update" for useing old versions. It's logic for newer filter versions, but not for older ones.
Ah ... And from whom do I get the money needed when the update from 4 to 5 is done? You? |

Hmmm back to the topic. Are there anyone that can help with my problem mentioned in the first post?
I really would like for the filters to download directly back to my Filter Forge program using Google Chrome. There must be others that have Google Chrome that use Filter Forge. What does you Manage Handlers looks like under the settings. Mine is blank and not functional. |

You are not forced to upgrade to FF5, you can stay on FF4 as long as you wish. |

I can suggest you switch to the built-in library viewer: select Tools > Options > Online > Use the built-in library browser (obsolete). After this, the 'Download more filters' link will be replaced by a button that opens the built-in viewer, so you won't need a browser to download filters. |

I know this is clear in your mind but if you have time I need all the steps. For example select tools fr om where? Thanks for you help.

Sorry for being not clear. Please run Filter Forge, and in the main menu select Tools > Options > Online > Use the built-in library browser (obsolete).

Thanks GMM I sometimes make things harder than the should be but it is all up an working using this method. Why don't more people us this method for downloading filters as it has a larger viewing area? What is the downside to this method VS downloading the other way.
Thanks again |

But your comment was:
So, either I have to update (and pay) or I can't download filters. Both options are negative afflicted. In other words: the (actually) granted access to the filters when buying FF ends with every (single) update. Not very appealing ... Any words to that? |

Yeah but that's not forcing to buy something, there's still a choice not to buy the latest version anyway. You can still make filters with the program if you have the standard version and above.
And this type of thing is standard throughout the software industry. It's obvious you can't open newer versions of a file with an old program given the new version always new functionality. Example: Adobe Illustrator CS2 can't open Adobe Illustrator CC2015 files. And if you want to export for CS2, you have to go through hoops especially if you're using features present only in CC2015. Same story here. FFXML files are just save files from FilterForge. New versions of FilterForge always include some new feature that's not present in old versions of FilterForge. Paying for an upgrade has always been the way to receive the latest toolset. |

Please read again what I wrote. If the latest update is needed to download filters, how is that _not_ a force?
Nobody said something about creating filters, but downloading them. Big difference. And if I contribute filters to the community, I expect that everybody can download them. So I expect for myself also that I can download every filter I want from the community. Denying the download of filters (that I would see as an core argument for FF) with no real reason is not the way how to treat buying users.
Sure, but again, read what I wrote: I can't download a 2.0 filter with FF 4.0. I also mentioned that it's logic, that one probably can't use filters made with a higher version. But it's _not_ logic, why lower version filters can't be downloaded. In fact, why denying the download alltogether? I'm pretty sure, some higher version filters can work on lower version FF, if no "new" option is involved. So it would better that the download is done everytime, and then FF decides if it can be opend or not. Or better, FF tells the user "If you open this filter, you maybe lose option x ... Open Yes/No?". That's approximately how your rather bad example with Illustrator works. A higher Illustrator version can be saved for lower versions. It tells you then, that this or that option will be not available. And in most cases, that's OK. But the important thing to that is: you can open and use it, and the user decides if he want's that, not Illustrator/Adobe. So I would _highly_ recommend to change the system in that way, so that users can download filters based on their installed version of FF and _not_ on what's the latest FF version is. That's how it has to be. |

@ Dark Rayden. I think I may know what your problem might be. If you have V-4 of Filter Forge and you tried to download a V-2 filter and a popup said you need a newer version, it was probably an update to V-4. On Dec 8th I believe a newer "version" of V-4 was released to fix some bugs. The popup isn't as clear as it should be. It should read something like "A free update to V-4 is needed to download this filter." Or something like that. Updates are released on occasion to older versions of filter forge and all you have to do is click download and follow the instructions and you should be good to go. It costs nothing for these updates. Of course if you try to download a version 5 filter the popup should read something like. " This filter is for a newer version of FF and you must have version 5 to install this filter." The problem is that the popups to both of these action are worded either very similar or exactly the same. This threw me off too when I first got FF. I thought it was forcing me to upgrade to a higher number version when it was just prompting me to update my current version. If you are still having a problem downloading filters from older version try downloading the prompt and see what it does.
To everyone else please excuse me for jumping in on your post. ![]() |

@Mardar
Thanks for clearification, this would make sense. And yes, from the message itself I would belive that the "newer version" would be 5. Can this be verified? I'm running here 4.014, so what's the latest version 4? |

Hey there. I reread the thing. Now I understand the situation a bit better. If anything, sorry for the message since it's just stirring up the conversation.
According to the news bulletin the last update to version 4 was 4.015. https://filterforge.com/more/news/1065.html |

Allright, I've updated version 4, now I'm on 4.015. Everything's fine and I can download filters again.
So, the only thing would be to make the message more specific so that users aren't confused, like I was. Thanks. Edit: BTW, I find the in-program filterbrowser _waaaay_ much better then useing the website. I highly recommend to develop this part further and not let it down (=obsolete) |

I have this problem still with ff6. This is a problem with chrome not recognizing FF download links. Nothing happens on one of my systems when I press the download button. I installed ff6 on a second machine and that one works. I'm using the same settings on chrome as I have all my accounts connected, so I don't understand why one computer would have this problem and the other one is fine. It seems to be a rare problem. exactly as the OP described.
Everything is missing in my handlers, can't figure out how to enable or fix it. It's the same for all browsers on this system, it will not allow file associations with a program from a web browser. I'm using windows 8.1 x64. So maybe it's a windows problem preventing it? Likewise I do find the inprogram browser to be very nice, but it's not a solution to the problem and shows something may be wrong with my main system that I use in other areas..I'd be curious to figure out how to fix this if anyone has a solution. |

That's not really a solution, as mentioned when you press on the button nothing happens, there's an issue with chrome, and then with the association..which is just a "filterforge" link coming out of whatever browser that simply doesn't exist as an association for it to load into anything in the first place. You can't modify it like most tutorials instruct you to cause it's not there. The program didn't install it on that machine for some reason as well.
I don't know how you post that as a solution, it's just describing file associations..I know what they are. |

If you can not set the file association in Chrome because of Windows 8, do the following:
Content type: filterforge File Type: ffxml Program: Filter Forge 6 Change file associations. To set File Associations in Windows 8 / 7, Open Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations. Select a file type in the list and click Change Program. You will be displayed a list of Programs along with a Description and the Current Default. It is possible that an earlier version (or some other program) has interfered with the file associations. Try looking at the Windows 8 file associations on the machine that works to compare. Math meets art meets psychedelia. |

Yes thats why I posted it... ![]() Sp perhaps its to do with security not launching the links connected with the button making it seem like the button not doing anything at all...aka blocking cookies....Try making exceptions for the Filter Forge website... ![]() Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

Find this under Settings...Then at the bottom click "show advanced settings"....Then go up to the Privacy section and click the button that says content settings...Put a tick on the one that says "Allow local data to be set"....Then close the browser and then try the button again on the Filters webpage....

Nope, that's the basic setting it seems, or at least it was already ticked. Yes no external protocol request pops. There's nothing in the extentions of the type ffxml, filterforge, or anything else, so unless you know how to add an entry manually which doesn't seem to be a thing, there's nothing to change.

I downloaded some filter ffxml files manually, and associated them with the app, filterforge in the x64 folder which is the exe that's linked to the shortcut I can open the filter with, there are actually 6 filterforge.exe files. Still when I click on a ffxml file nothing happens on this system.....and of course the download button still does nothing, but at least the association should be there.

I tried ie, and firefox, both result in errors. I'm not reinstalling chrome for what appears to be an isolated case, and the other browsers are effected as well. I might reinstall filter forge though, but I dont think that's getting at the root cause.

I tried to reproduce the button not working in chrome....I did manage to kill the button so it does not work so maybe this is related somehow....I found that if you set the protocol handler exception for filter forge to true then that button does not work...If you set it to false then the button works....But since you said that other browsers do not work as well then you might have something else going on....Did you try the built-in browser......Any firewalls or antivirus...could be blocking it..
btw the way here is how I changed the handler in chrome in case anyone has this certain button issue...Using win7.x64..... go to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data then look for a file named Local State Look for the image/text below or do a search for filterforge......I just used wordpad ..Change the value to false if it is set to true and then save the file...... ![]() Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

So here is the way to add this protocol to windows8...Involves some editing in the registry...
Protocol Handler One other thing to note is that if your other system that does work is also windows8 you could always export the associated registry keys and install them on the non-working system instead of doing it manually.... As the OP stated there are no handlers in chrome, the box is completely blanked out. I'll try the regedit.
