Trouble using filters in CS6

Hello, I've watched tutorials & have seen how people use the filters on individual layers in photoshop. However when I goto filters/filter forge 4 , I get sent to the app, I can preview various filters but there but cannot get back to photoshop unless I either cancel or apply the filter. Then in photoshop, if I've applied the filter, it is not a separate layer. Am I doing something incorrectly? Thanks.

Uhm, isn't this intended? You can either apply a filter or cancel... I don't see any more alternatives here.
