I haven't seen this come up, but Pixar has announced a new free license option for Renderman.

"RenderMan is now free for all non-commercial purposes, including evaluations, education, research, and personal projects. The non-commercial version of RenderMan is fully functional without watermark or limitation."

Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I do remember buying this for a LOT of money maybe 15 years or so ago. Anyway, thought there might be some on these forums who might be interested in this.
