Does anyone know if there is a filter that can put realistic looking snow just on the top of edges? I am looking for an effect that makes letters of the alphabet look like they have been snowed on. I scanned the filter library for "drip" and "snow", but the default lifesaver image doesn't always give a good representation of what the filter would do to characters on a transparent background.

That would be a good one.
Alien Software eye candy version 5 a 7 had one that would do snow on top and if wanted Ice sickles on the bottom. I'm also curious if FF has this. |

Yes, I've seen the Eye Candy one, and it is the effect I am looking for. I think if it were possible to achieve with FF, then someone would already have done it.

I havent´s seen any filter that is able to make this when searching for this in the library and think that maybe would be difficult to make as you have to analyse and search for WHERE the snow should "fall" and using a plain black and white image with letters, I do not know how this could be done, the only way I can think myself is doing the analyse using a height map, but this would not work on plain letters. I think that the best option is: ![]() 1 - Use the well done Eye Candy 5 Nature - Snow drift (shown here above) 2 - Search for Photoshop actions or styles that could do this effect 3 - Find a good photoshop tutorial about making the snow drift effect manually as for example this ones --> 30 chilling winter photoshop tutorials 4 - if you are not using photoshop, search for a tutorial that could make it perhaps using your own software |

Thanks for the suggestions, SpaceRay. Eye Candy is a really nice program, but not within my budget right now, as I just upgraded to FF 4. I did find a free Photoshop action that does the job.

Well, I haven't looked at that PS action yet, but here's a quick crack at it:

Xirja and Indigo Ray, thank you for creating this effect in FF!
xirja: yours looks very good on the font I tried it on, but it only applied the effect to the first two letters. The icicle effect is very nice! ![]() Indigo Ray: your version works perfectly with the text I loaded. ![]() Now there are already some lovely falling snow filters that can be applied to the results... ![]() |

The limitation of that method, at this time, is that it needs to be a square source image to work.

xirja, the new filters apply the affect perfectly to the whole text now!
It was very interesting to me to examine the components used in the FF filters to create this effect. It took a lot of time and creative energy to make these filters, so I will make a point of using them instead of using alternate methods whenever I want to create winter text. Thank you again Edit: the only change I think would improve the SnowandIce filters would be to do something to make the snow overlap the top of the letters. Right now the letters look like they are on top of the snow layer. |

My pleasure, but whatever gets the job done. I found it improbable that FF couldn't do this, so I had to give it a try. The Y offset will give some random edge coverage, as in Indigo Ray's example.

cool and interesting work
Where in the filter is the Y offset? There is no setting with Y offset, and inside the filter there is no offset component Thanks |
