Hi ya-all
Does anyone here do any textures for 2nd Life? For some reason, Gold Textures just come out Dull and Life-less. The mesh Textures is a different story, those textures have a great reflective quality.

I just wondering if anyone made any good gold textures for jewelry. That's been eluding me.

Gold is hard to do as a texture, without the metallic sheen gold is just a kind of dull yellowy colour so using just a texture is always unimpressive in a 3D environment, the trick in SL is to use a low or medium shiny effect on a fairly bright yellowish metal texture, and add a little of the glow effect (usually not more than 0.1) to brighten it.
Using twin layers of texture, with a shiny surface, then a partially transparent texture on a layer above it can give a nice effect too.

It's not perfect as Second Life doesn't support the fancier metallic specular effects that better engines do that you'd need to make a really good gold look but you can get a decent look from a bit of tweaking.

I don't know how you do a double layer unless you make a shell just a touch bigger than your object.

I've seen 1 Silver dollar dress that has reflections and gold looks great. I think it's mesh. SL's engine actually works with reflections on this object.

Yes, making a slightly larger shell is the way to do it, although I have heard that if you make two objects of identical size and position and set one to have a solid texture and one to have a transparent texture then the transparent texture will always be seen on top, though i've not tried that.

Whether an object is mesh or prim has no effect on the textures, you should be able to get the same effects on any object, however shape affects how well reflections will show, slightly curved surfaces show reflections a lot better.

Well,, my goal is to get a good looking gold... So, I'm trying this out..

I found this out yesterday. Take a Prim, any prim.. remove the default texture in the texture window, then add a color or another texture.. go to Shiny and select High, Med, Low--what ever and then add Brightness,,, and you do get good reflections. A low bit of Glow,, helps... Not too much.

Speaking of Gold Texture.. I haven't seen all that much good Gold in Filter Forge,, and I think I downloaded all of the gold ones.

2nd Life is interesting, I actually made some real US Dollars there.. Making money in a computer game is just a ground breaking idea.

I should get a Avatar..
