I do all my work on a computer that is not connected to the internet. I know the location of the filters (documents and settings ---> user ---> application data ---> filter forge 3) Using my online computer, after purchasing FF, I downloaded A LOT of filters and copied all the filters over to my offline computer. I then spent considerable time deleting the filters I don't intend to use. Since then, however, I have downloaded a few more and I now want to move just those new filters to my offline computer. Which files do I need to copy over to do this?

I tried copying only the .ffxml from the library folder plus the files containing the same name from the thumbnail and cache folders, but the filter does not show up. What else do I need to do?

You should delete the System\Library.xml and System\LibraryStructure.xml files and download any new filter from the library: Filter Forge will update the structure automatically.

Oh, this won't work as you cannot update the structure online. I'm afraid moving specific filters to the offline computer is next to impossible, unless you're willing to modify Library.xml and LibraryStructure.xml manually. I would recommend you copy all the library filters together with Library.xml and LibraryStructure.xml to the other computer.

If I do what you suggest, "copy all the library filters together with the Library.xml and the LibraryStructure.xml to the other computer", I will have wasted HOURS of time spent deleting hundreds of filters that I don't need/want because all of those filters will be back, will they not?

There really isn't a way to do this??? I'm totally bummed then because I'll never be able to update my Filter Forge filters on my offline computer.

What if I do this...

Having weeded out (on the offline computer) all filters that I don't want, copy the entire FilterForge folder contents from my offline computer back over to my online computer, thus updating and removing unwanted filters from the online computer. The two should be identical then, correct?... with deleted filters gone. Then, when I download new filters that I know I want to keep, do the reverse... copy the FilterForge folder contents back over from my online computer to my offline computer, thus updating Filter Forge on the offline computer.

(I sure hope you can follow that explanation)

Do you think that would work?

Yes, moving a set of filters to the online computer, updating the structure and then copying everything back should do the trick. Be sure to include the Library.xml and LibraryStructure.xml files at every step.

And I strongly recommend you make backups of everything in case you accidentally copy or delete something wrong.

Okay... thanks. I'll give it a shot and report back my success smile;) (I'm optimistic)

Well it looks like I was right in that there's a way easier method than all that moving the sets of filters back and forth between my offline and online computers every time I download new filters.

I discovered that if I put the newly downloaded filters into a folder and simply place that folder somewhere on my offline computer, then double-click on the new filter file, it opens up in Filter Forge and adds itself to the program, thus updating the Library.xml and LibraryStructure.xml files! Although strangely, it put itself in "My Filters" instead of whatever category it actually belongs in. But I don't really care where it puts itself as long as its there.

Additional information as I've continued to figure this out...

I tried again to copy the filter file as described in the first post in this thread but this time, I copied ONLY the .ffxml file, and not the associated thumbnail and cache files. And that worked. When I started up Filter Forge, the filter was there with all information intact.

I'm going to use that method because when I use the method described in the post immediately above this one, some funky things happen. Not only does the filter get placed in "My Filters" but for some reason, I lose the filter number and other information.

Take, for example, the filter THRASH by Carl. I downloaded that filter, copied the file onto a flash drive and then put it on my offline computer in a temporary folder. I double-clicked on it and it opened up in Filter Forge. No problem so far, however...

The ffxml file got created in the "My Filters" folder, not in the "System ---> Library" folder. In looking in the "My Filters" folder, I see that the file is not Library_8691.ffxml, but instead, appears as THRASH.ffxml. And within Filter Forge itself, the filter is in the "My Filters" category instead of whatever category it actually belongs in. Not only that, I see that the information in the ABOUT tab is missing the additional author information (only the name appears). Also, there is no REWARDS information, and there is no DETAILS information... no filter number, no downloads information, no usage rank, no nothing. I get the filter name, the author's name, and DESCRIPTION and KEY WORDS. That's it.

Very strange. Don't know why it's happening that way but that's what it's doing. Hope this info helps somebody along the way.

Ozmandias, this is expected behavior. If you are ok with library filters becoming "My filters" and losing credits to the original author and other details you can continue with this easier way.
